The Final Word

This debate is certainly no easy one, so before I get to my verdict let me at least explain some of the problems with it. First of all, if you've read through this whole thing by now you've probably noticed that I've made a ton of generalizations about the genres you love. I definitely would agree with this, but when taking a look at the industry in this way it's probably the only method for getting anything done. All that  being said, for the most part this has been an argument about what makes certain types of games sell and what legitimizes their role as a genre. For shooters and RPGs, visuals functioned in somewhat different ways but they manage to keep experiences fresh and new. For the more old school focused options like fighters and platformers it has been all about the gameplay, and this may in some part be a reflection to the humble pixelated roots both categories come from.

Old and New Mario

When it comes to my personal opinion on the matter, visuals have never been a top priority for me. Sure a game can look as great as it wants, but ultimately if the gameplay aspect suffers that's probably what's going to give it that poor review score that will turn hours of hard work and coding into sheer nothingness. All in all, I think all gamers would prefer a game that plays well rather than slowing down to accommodate a complex lighting scheme. Visuals have certainly become more important as genres grow, but at the end of the day enjoying a game is all about playing it. If you want sheer special effects and presentation, watch a movie.

Overall Winner: Gameplay

As the article says, I'm much more of a gameplay person. The only time where I think graphics would really outweigh that would possibly be in a point and click or some of those movie-like games that are coming out where the gameplay is so simple that the visuals have to be interesting.

Both are needed equally. I won't play a game that looks great and only lasts 5 hours. But on the flip side, I won't play a 100 hour game with crappy graphics. With today's technology, want to be completely emerged in a game. Look at it this way, it'd be really hard to enjoy a movie on the big screen today if they used techniques from the 70s or 80s. There have been great games with what we now consider to have crappy graphics. Mario 64 had amazing graphic for the time, as well as amazing gameplay. If that was released today, I'd have no desire to buy it. Same goes for 007 Golden Eye. I must have spent 1000+ hours playing that with friends, but today when we try to play for nostalgia purposes, it's just frustrating.

I break a game down into three categories that all need equal attention and execution.

-Gameplay
-Graphics
-Controls

If even just one of those isn't met, it's not getting my $60.

a bit of both, but graphics stick out the most to me.

Both of you make a pretty solid case for graphics. I see the point about first impressions. For me, an engine doesn't need to look impeccable, but more presentable. The graphics stick out a lot, but look at games like Minecraft. I wouldn't say that has the best looking set.

Sometimes I also think of how good graphics can sometimes slow a game down too.

I did not RTFA because it was multipaged. Please stop doing that. Your site takes awfully long to load on mobiles and multipaged articles are out of the question for me. Even on the desktop I do not like to click four times to read what you have to say.
For me, both matter. I don't think I'd have ever thought of playing la-mulana if they had not remade it to what it is now. Gameplay and graphics wise. Also: I never understand why somebody would not like to play the SNES Zelda because of the graphics, still, I do know people that have not played it for that reason.
I would not go back to the NES LoZ for myself, because it does not appeal to me very much

Good point bro. Sorry about the multi-page stuff, I think even if we were to do it in one the interface would still take a long time to load with all the text. Maybe some day soon we can get working on a mobile version of the site. We appreciate your input though!

Why is this even an article? Any real gamer will tell you gameplay always comes before graphics. You can't polish a turd and many retro games are still widely bought and played regardless of age or appearance.

Lol I would agree with you, but as you can see from comments above it might not be so cut and dry. From a genre perspective there's a debate to be had I think.

Gameplay.

They're games, not movies or comic books.
A game can be as pretty and as detailed as real life, but if the gameplay isn't good and fun, there isn't any point in playing it.

That being said though, it is nice to not have graphics that are an eyesore.

Yeah I agree. What about for genres that already have their basics set up like shooters though. Should graphics take a front seat then?

Graphics, in my opinion, should never take a front seat, though I think exceptions would be for virtual reality(wheneve r they get around to that), and HD remakes/upgrades(or whatever they'll call them in the future)

Oh my god I know. The source engine still looks great now in a lot of cases but I can just imagine what's coming next!

Plain an simple, ultimately, gameplay rules. I will never play a game that looks great but plays like shit, but a have done the opposite occasionally (given that the gameplay is REALLY good and usually unique in some way).

As someone else said, you can't polish a turd. Kinda sad that there actually are gamers who feel the other way around...
