Category 2: The RPG Genre
Like fighters RPGs are a game style that has enjoyed a long and profitable history. Still what aspect is it that helps to make these games sell big year after year? When talking of gameplay, there are any number of ways that this category can be consumed. You've got turn-based options that date all the way back to the NES days but have been popularized through franchises like Pokemon. To make that structure work, you don't need heavy graphics because the reliance there is all about strategy. However things get more complicated when flashy action RPGs like Kingdom Hearts suddenly get thrown into the mix. In this case, the world around you becomes just as important as killing those heartless.

With so many different ways to play, the difference to me with RPGs really comes down to the aspect of creating a good story. There's no denying that in most cases making a good game for this class means you're going to have to create a larger than life but believable story, and the best way to do that is to rely on visuals to transport your players into that unique world. Take a look at the recent release of Ni No Kuni. The visuals are what bring you in to the story and in a lot of ways create that distinct aspect of story that makes RPGs so gosh darn entertaining for hours on end. Gameplay is certainly important, but creating an interesting environment to place your story in is what this category is all about.

I break a game down into three categories that all need equal attention and execution.
-Gameplay
-Graphics
-Controls
If even just one of those isn't met, it's not getting my $60.

For me, both matter. I don't think I'd have ever thought of playing la-mulana if they had not remade it to what it is now. Gameplay and graphics wise. Also: I never understand why somebody would not like to play the SNES Zelda because of the graphics, still, I do know people that have not played it for that reason.
I would not go back to the NES LoZ for myself, because it does not appeal to me very much

They're games, not movies or comic books.
A game can be as pretty and as detailed as real life, but if the gameplay isn't good and fun, there isn't any point in playing it.
That being said though, it is nice to not have graphics that are an eyesore.

As someone else said, you can't polish a turd. Kinda sad that there actually are gamers who feel the other way around...
