Blockbuster Video is going broke, we've known that since late 2008, pre-GFC, but one of it's head executives is sayng that video game publishers still love his company...why?
"...because it takes away from trade-ins"
Blockbuster's commercial director Gerry Butler spoke with MCV about the state of his company and how it draws customers from buying used games and keeps adverts and customers still coming in. In Britain - I didn't know this but - they are starting to heavily promote it's rental services, which is already overhauled, but there aren't that many options in the UK.
If you rent a game from them, they no longer charge late fees (which is not exactly a great way to keep a business running), but you can extend your rental using online services for an extra day. If you rent the game, you can then buy it and Blockbuster will discount your rental fee...too bad if you wanted to take it back though.
According to Gerry Butler, all of this just means more money in the publishers pocket, which is incredibly true. The used games sales only matter to companies like EB Games and GameStop who get a large percentage of their profit from these sales. Blockbuster seems to have a good and strict selling structure, even with a proper rental business, as opposed to businesses like GameFly.
Butler says they've "ramped up the rental side" of their business and have gotten a lot of support from the publishers. They like renting because they're not trade-ins - plain and simple. I really need to look into how damaging this is to the industry or if there are any faults that could take place with BB's structure.
I actually would love to have the system BB has in Australia, as I'm often disappointed after a few days with a gaming experience. But with a rental system that turns into a full purchase, that's too bad. Worse comes to worse, you finish a game in 7 days or a week and it's only cost you $14 to rent.

Short gameplay and multiplayer centric.
Online passes and whatnot.
The industry is doing everything in their power to kill reselling and renting so this makes absolutely no sense.
