PlayStation Eyepad is a Patent That We'll Never See |

A new patent filed by Sony earlier this month shows us a device that resembles a Udraw pad on steroids. This touch tablet device that Sony is calling the Eyepad actually has some promising features. The Eyepad could offer more in the way of features and usefulness than we got from the PlayStation Move. But I'm guessing less than we would get from the Wii U.

Right out of the box there aren’t any real advantages to the Eyepad as it comes with all of the usual controls like a D-pad, the usual PlayStation buttons, an analog stick, and SIXAXIS sensor. Where the Eyepad sets itself apart is the huge touch pad that is in the middle of the controller, the Move support, and the stereoscopic cameras embedded in the corners of the controller.
The Eyepad achieves its PlayStation Move functionality with illuminated stripes on the edges of the controller that would be read the same way as the glowing ball at the end of the move controller. But the coolest part is the stereoscopic cameras. By placing stereoscopic cameras in all 4 corners of the device's PS Vita like touch pad they have effectively given you the ability to scan anything placed on the pad in a full 360-degees. You could then in theory be rendered in a game or Home like virtual world. In theory it could even be used to scan the face of the player to map to a custom character in a game

Remember though that just because a company files a patent that doesn’t mean they are going to produce it or utilize it. We've seen this happen over the years with the various disk protection patents we have seen from Sony themselves. But who knows...this could actually make it to market right? I just wouldn’t be looking for the Eyepad in stores anytime soon.
