Video Chief Blu-ray Warning |

In an extraordinary speech, Warner Home Video president Warren Lieberfarb has hit out at Sony over its tactics in winning the next generation war between Blu-ray and HD-DVD.
Source: Next-gen.biz
Speaking at the Perspectives in European Video conference, he addressed Sony's battle to bring its Blu-ray format, used in PlayStation 3, to prominence.
He said movie studios are being drawn into the war between console manufacturers, against their will, and not necessarily in their interest. He said, "If I put Blu-ray in PlayStation and I don't license it to Microsoft for Xbox and I get all the studios to only publish in PlayStation, I'll beat Microsoft in the next-generation games market. We've been sucked into PlayStation versus Xbox."
He went on, "Hollywood blew it. They got duped. They could have created the format that optimized their creative interests. It looks like we lost, because there are six studios supporting Blu-ray and only three supporting HD-DVD. But you know, there's always surprises."
'Samurai' Sony
He said, "If you ever read 'The Art of War,' you will see all of Sony's moves, including taking all its enemies in the same tent and then leaving them empty-handed. These are things that they have done historically."
He added, "They did the same thing to Matsushita and Betamax, they did the same thing to Matsushita on compact disc, they did the same thing to Matsushita on the digital video camcorder. They compete like samurai. It isn't the way we compete in the West."
Lieberfarb, who is in Microsoft's anti Blu-ray camp, urged the industry to embrace HD-DVD. "Convergence is here, everything is digital, the Internet is going to deliver video, you are going to want to pass information from one device to another and HD-DVD versus Blu-ray is really the first battle in the issue of who controls the home."

Hollywood wins with Blue-Ray, because the PS3 alone is going to push the next-gen movie format much harder and much faster than HD-DVD could ever hope to on it's own. So Sony controls distrobution instead of Toshiba controlling distrobution. Whats the difference there? With an accelerated adoption rate and the superior format Hollywood wins out big. GG.

Oh my God, look at those evil Sony bastards.
Trying to gain support for their OWN product.
For shame.

The man is saying that he doesn't like how their being forced into choosing sides so abruptly instead of past situations where the proven format beats out. I personally am rooting for HD-DVD. Sony puts too much in the way of protection on their devics and it really bugs me.

does it really matter? wouldnt having more space to put more extras in better? i dont see why they are complaining...generally movies dont reach the full capacity of a DVD so why complain about the blue-ray? more is better in this case.

Microsoft is getting really desprate. lawl at them. LAWL I say.
They are backing the losing format.
Reply
If course they are backing the loosing format, what else are they going to do? Back the format designed and profited on by their number one console competitor?
HD-DVD could cost twice as much, be half the size, and eat all the food in your house, and Microsoft would STILL support them over Blu-Ray because of the one simple fact about HD-DVD that wont change, Its Not Sony.
Which ever format wins out, all of the other manufacturers will need to pay royalties for using the product, same as we do now for DVD, and the one thing that Microsoft does not want is to pay sony royalties.

Love the phrase "It isn't the way we compete in the West."... Pardon???
Kill or be killed is always the way of corps. Or steal and due to being a big corp smaller one gets destroyed and looses their stuff.
As for them not wanting to take sides, they don't have to. Sony is releasing their movies on Blu-Ray disk, so, then either put them on Blu's or HD-DVD, or even the HDVD's. Sony is putting movies on PSP formatted disks, do other company's have to, nope, but if they want to sell more movies, they can.
As for the HD-DVD, that will be dead unless M$ gets a major corp behind them and starts mass producing the disks, and then ACTUALLY PUT THE DRIVE IN THE BLOODY 360!!!
Sony has always stated they are moving the PS to be the hub of Entertainment Center in a home. Being gaming station, movie station, etc. So, this is a suprise to people?
As for the Art of War... all major corps do it, just quieter, or slightly different, but the end result is the same.

He was ousted as Head of Operations and is now purely a MS advisor. I swear this site never checks information before posting nonsense.

This guy is desperate because Sony is not doing it the MS way? Are you kidding me? How dare this looser go out n say support HD-DVD when the technology is way past it. Its like saying support a 5 1/2" Floppy instead of a CD. I cant believe he is *****ing about how Sony has literally PWNED everyone w/ BLU RAY and hese like...well we dont do it this way. well ****got i got one thing to tell ya, your a buncha backstabbers too, so dont tell me you dont act like samurais becuz ur products suck. I would kill this guy if i could.

I second that, Whats Payola?
And Blu-Ray Is better in like all aspects. But ya Copy protection hurts consumers. So depending on how it turns out...
But I doubt Bandwidth can keep up with the new formats, Imagine downloading a 45 gig Blue-Ray DVD rather than a 4.5 gig DVD...

Copy protection hurts consumers.
Wha... How?! The only thing copy protection hurts is piracy; admittedly I have downloaded some movies at times, but not being able to rip some crappy hollywood movie doesn't hurt CONSUMERS in the least. And don't gimme that "legitimate backup" BS. We all know that's fake.
But I doubt Bandwidth can keep up with the new formats, Imagine downloading a 45 gig Blue-Ray DVD rather than a 4.5 gig DVD...
Well, if you're downloading the movie for free, you'll have to wait. P2P'ers can't be choosers, in that sense. And if you are referring to something along the lines of iTunes... Why wait when you could buy the disk, if it means that much to you?

Actually, the protection issue has to do with copying the image of the disc to your hard drive, something completely legal. Currently, the Blu Ray doesn't support that feature, although I hear it will because HP has threatened leaving because of that (and because of other features on HD-DVDs). Also, the read speed on HD-DVDs are a LOT faster than Blu Ray, I'm confused whenever people say BluRay is faster.
As for storage, HD-DVD already has dual-layer working, but Blu Ray is still getting the bugs out of their Dual layer discs. Still, isn't 25gigs enough? I'm personally waiting for Holographic Discs for massive storage.
And has everyone been in holes the past 2 decades? Sony always pull this proprietary garbage and gets shanked. Guess what, Sony's Betamax had more support than VHS. Guess who won..
From what I see now, I'd have to side with Blu Ray, but Sony's past troubles me enough to make me tentative, I'm going to wait until both are out to make a decision.

Actually, Blu-Ray does support copying the image of the disc to you hard drive, it just doesn't require it as a feature for every disc as HD-DVD does. This is why HP is threatening to leave; they want it mandatory. Blu-Ray is actually (according to reports) quite good at creating a copy onto the hard drive or streaming. Just not required.

Sorry to say this 0xffff, but are you dumb? if there is one thing copy protection dosen't effect its piracy. How can it affect piracy that i cant play my legally bought "CD" in my pc or whatever i choose to, and have to go online and download it instead to have a chance to listen to it? Only thing it does for me is that i will no longer buy a "cd" with the groups that choose to release a defective product. No copy protection will ever effect piracy.

Wrong copy protections have major effect on piracy. have you even seen starforce protected games. people have been going on and on about how much starforce is bull**** becauset hey can play burned games.
Some burned games work that have starforce but starfroce has effectively decreased the number of pirated copies.
With the new version you acually have to remove the cables from your cd-drives to use images and even then it requires a custom install of starforce software.
All blue-ray has to do is use the same system fro pcs. Use a starforce like protection that installs drivers and requires them to play. Combine a system based required software and protection on the cd and you will cut piracy of movies like you wont believe.
I know about sonys music rootkit and i believe it was the best thing ever if they got it to work exclusively with their files and not everything. I know sony wont stop developing anti-piracy software, every company does. Its only a matter of time before sony uses a new type of software on their music cds.
Blueray may not be as fast as HD-DVD but let me ak you this, how many of us need to read blue-ray at more then 4x. Its created for next gen movies with higher capacity needs. the PS3 wont be any better with a a drive thats blazing fast. A PC wont benifit from a blazing fast BR drive if the hard drives dont support the speed.

What's with all that bull****?
Blu-ray has much faster reading speed than HD-DVD - stop lying you goddamn idiots.
It has more capacity, better data protection and better anti-scratch coating (you can't scratch it with a screwdriver). It's better in every term.
This guy isn't even working for Warner anymore "we're loosing, so Blu-ray is evil, because major studios like it" - WTF? This guy should be sued because he's being a racist on this one also.
Downloading 45 GB would take longer than 4.5 GB? Well no ****ing way, how'd you get to it? This guy is a genius.
Reply
Vietone, what version of starforce is that and what games use it? I havent encountered it.
Reply
Starfore, haha, its only a matter of time before its cracked like all the earlier versions. It has had no effect at all.

Im gonna wait and see which is better. let the big corps fuss and whine about that crap. just because someone writes that this one does this and that one does that dosent mean its the actual truth.. just wait til they come out.. try them both.. and then decide for yourself. Just a suggestion all
