Sony and Toshiba Blu-Ray Alliance No More |

Toshiba Corp. announced that does not expect an unified format for a next-generation DVD before its year-end launch of HD DVD players.
“We've been working toward unification. But talks are now stalled. We will press ahead with the product launch as planned," Toshiba President Atsutoshi Nishida told Reuters in an interview.â€
Andy Parsons, a Blu-ray spokesman, confirmed that the talks had stalled but denied that it meant the two groups had reached an impasse.
“We are hopeful that we can still find a resolution," Parsons said. "We still have time to find a way to avoid having two formats go to market, which isn't good for consumers or us.â€
HD DVD players are expected to become available in late 2005 and widely available in 2006. Toshiba plans to launch its first HD DVD products, a CE player and recorder, in the fourth quarter of 2005. The company also plans to release notebook PC with a built-in HD DVD drive at the end of 2005.
A single-layer Blu-ray Disc can hold up to 25 gigabytes of data and a double-layer Blu-ray Disc will hold up to 50 gigabytes of data. In contrast, a HD DVD disc can hold up to 15 GB per layer per side, offering capacities up to 30 GB per side or 60 GB per disc.

I would prefer blu-ray but the damn thing is repulsive and large
What the heck...This has been known for a long time. I like this site, but its annoying when old news either gets posted or reposted.
yep, I read this months ago on GameStop I think
actualy all HD-DVD players will be able to Read tri-layer discs (so 45GB vs. blu-rays 50GB)and HD-DVD discs are planned to be released that are DVDs on 1 side and HD-DVD on the other(that is a killer feature people) and I think, I may be wrong, I think HD-DVD players will be able to play DVDs(another killer feature) I think, because of blu-ray only having 5GB more than HD-DVD and compatability as a disadvantage HD-DVD is better. But It doesn't matter which 1 is better because HVD will kick both of there asses.(3.9TB 1GB/sec data transfer rate and backwards compatable with DVD)holograms rule!
