US company Imation has announced that they have completed the Blu-ray and HD DVD disc development, and will start to produce and sell the discs soon. The timing is perfect to the slated disc drives in the middle of 2006. The detailed release date and price is yet to be announced.
HD DVD standard is made up of:
- HD DVD-R 15GB (Single Layer) / 30GB (Double Layer)
- HD DVD-RW 15GB (Single Layer) / 30GB (Double Layer)
Blu-ray Disc standard is made up of:
- BD-R 25GB (Single Layer) / 50GB (Double Layer)
- BD-RE 25GB (Single Layer) / 50GB (Double Layer)
The company is also working on some coating for durability of the discs.

Now the MS fanboys have been repeating that Sony's going to lose alot of money because of Blu Ray. I'll clarify here what i did there. Sony WILL lose money on the PS3, but the also lost money on the PS2. It takes a while for a profit to be reached, the same goes with MS. The thing is that sony will not be paying retail price for their hardware/software, the will be buying wholesale. This means that they willl be paying a fraction of the for each individual item. The Blu Ray player will cost around $1800. Now what do you think sony's thinking? They will be trying to get other people, apart from gamers, to buy THEIR $400-$600 device that can do the exact same thing (and then some ^_^). This will cause people to have a cheaper altenative to a player costing 3-4x more, a VERY smart move for sony if you ask me.

I agree with...also...besides whole sale...if they buy...1 million players...i'm sure they get discounts for buying bundles such as that....
But anyway...I don't think the blu-ray player will be that great in the ps3...so i will probably pick up another one later down the road(seeing as no conosole, xbox, ps2, and 360 have had great playback with movies....)

You know...there is something called a "period". It's a little dot used at the ends of things we humans call "sentences". Just thought I'd let you know.
What I'm really interested in is price. Blu-Ray was supposed to be much more expensive than HD-DVD to manufacture, until the Blu-Ray camp's engineers found a way to manufacture them on the cheap, at just a little bit more cost than HD-DVDs. I wonder how that will be reflected in price.
