What the Hell is Going on with the PS Vita? |
Listed in: News Tags: price drops, ps vita, red alert, rumors, Sony
Just a couple of weeks after Sony adamantly stated it would not be dropping the price of the PS Vita in the west, numerous sources are reporting that the company has done just that. If you hop over to the official Sony online store, for example, you can pick up the 3G model of the system for $250—a $50 price reduction. And if you swing by a Sony store, you may be able to snag the same system for just $199.

So what the heck is going on? Sony hasn’t announced anything (and certainly hasn’t confirmed the price drops), but these are real prices in real stores. And many of the Sony stores contacted noted that the 3G model of the PS Vita is seeing a price reduction because the model is about to be discontinued. Joystiq even went so far as to call every Sony store in the country, discovering in the process that information is scattered. Some stores say the sale ends Sunday, some say they have no idea and some still have the old pricing in the system.
Crazy, huh? Of course, it does sound quite a bit like Sony to reduce the price of the Vita without actually telling anyone. They’re notorious for “Oops” moments like that.
Anyway, we’ll keep you updated. In the meantime, you may want to snag a 3G Vita before they potentially disappear.

I don't know for sure, but I suspect a redesign's in the works. It won't be anytime soon, but Sony's long term goal is to be able to stream content from the PS4 to a Vita anywhere in the world.
With 3g connectivity, that's impossible. Even if you sat down at a Starbucks and hopped onto their wireless g, it's impossible.
I reckon they won't reintroduce a SIM carrying model until mobile internet catches up to their vision, and when it does it'll be in a smaller form-factor.

There are no monthly payments (you pay as you go). It only reduces battery life when 3g is active (wifi will exactly the same).
For me in the UK, buying one at launch, it came with a HUGE perk - Wipeout 2048 for free (which I wanted to buy anyway) so it was cheaper to get 3g model than a wifi one with Wipeout purchased separately.
