Sound Off: Success for the Vita

Ó

Last week, I wrote a PoV article titled “Vita will Fail.” In that article, I used the device’s performance in Japan and the lackluster reviews of its launch titles to draw the conclusion that the device would not be able to overtake its primary competitor, the Nintendo DS.

mfvitasales2

The comment war that erupted was one-part insults, one-part thoughtful commentary, and one-part argument over why exactly the Vita needs to beat the 3DS in the first place. This third thread in the conversation is intriguing to me, as I had approached the situation strictly from a Vita vs. 3DS perspective.

Today, Sony announced that the Vita has officially sold 1.2 million units since launching in December. Breaking that figure apart, the device moved around 579,000 before global launch, and an additional 600,000 since last week. This number is apparently higher than Sony’s internal expectations, so by all accounts we can consider the first week of global launch a success.

Which brings me to the question I’d like to pose in this week’s Sound Off: How do you define success for the PS Vita? Does it need to topple the 3DS?

I define the success of the Vita by how many Wild Arms, Megaman, and Castlevania games (that are not Lords of Shadow) are released in the USA.

Also, homebrew would help also.

Many people are buying it for the wrong reasons. I am seeing PSVITA games in the store and they are horrible games. I am not buying it at all until I see more than 20 awesome games for I will buy it. For now, no thanks. Wise is a reward. Indeed!

When you finally end up buying it it will cost 150 USD, 32GB sticks will cost 20 dollars, the battery will last twice as long, and it will have a better CPU.

That really depends on your taste in games. I myself am a huge fighting game fan, having put hundreds of hours into MvC on the Dreamcast and BlazBlue and Guilty Gear being my favorite fighting games hands down. That made two easy purchases for me, throw in Wipeout and Rayman as it looked like a great platformer and then Uncharted for the sake of it being one of the main selling points and I already have 5 games. And you know what? They are all incredibly well done. I never thought I'd say that I enjoy a fighting game on a handheld platform but they play amazingly well on here. Wipeout is incredible, far more than I expected. Rayman is a very fun and colorful looking platformer and Uncharted, while pixelated, looks incredible for a launch title on a handheld system. I also bought Super Stardust and while that game doesn't have a ton of depth, for the price it was a great buy.

Psp sold well in the west but would you call that a success? I could probably actually hold all of the decent Psp games in my 2 hands so by any measure the answer's no. And even if they sell a Billion Vitas all that means is Sony is making a load of money.

The 3DS and Vita cater to different markets, so it's not a matter of the Vita overtaking the 3DS, and instead people should look at the markets the systems are doing well in vs. the big picture.

YEAH! Who cares who's doing better then whoever? All we really care about is if the're good games. If the company is doing well and they give us what we want, all is good.

Sony made Butt load of money from Psp so they class it as a success, but when you have enough fingers to count the decent games then that's a failure, and just remember calling it a success because of Homebrew doesn't count because Sony did everything in their power to stop it.

Launch line-ups are usually pretty mediocre, but the Vita one (by comparison at the very least) actually looks impressive.
Some people may say they want 20 good games on the platform before they buy it, but I think 2 is a perfect amount of games to get a console for. Between Wipeout and Uncharted I'd be a happy gamer until more games did come out.

That said, not picking it up until memory stick prices drop, they seem to be more crucial than ever before.

The prices will drop if you buy them, not the other way around.

Considering I cannot afford that many games, I could buy it now.
But I just got a new computer, so I'll wait.

If Sony get back what they spent producing the thing, that's all they "need". But they "desire" more ofcourse.

And my turds will drop every time i buy food and put in my mouth and that doesn't work the other way around either, except i do talk a lot of shit so i guess that analogy doesn't work, but anyway i do know any good Vita analogy does need the word shit in there somewhere, anyway seriously the Psp has been struggling for a long time and there's absolutely no reason the Vita's gonna do any better because the hardcore handheld market is just dying, so common sense says sell them cheap and once more people own them you sell games to make the profits, i mean it worked for Ps3 but people actually wanted a home console and they always knew they'd make money eventually.

"The prices will drop if you buy them, not the other way around."

Yes, because the 3DS price drop was because it was selling so well.

Resistance: Retribution
The 3rd Birthday
Final Fantasy IV Complete Collection
GTA: Liberty City Stories

LOL who buy NDS or 3DS ?
O just say a unique Real Rival to NDS OR 3DS is PSP because The Graphics is tôo Poor in Nintendo Platform buy PSP reach The limit yourself but Nintendo Portables is not capable.
Mg old NDS i Trade for and Dungle JAILBREAK for PS3 and The 3DS i have Trade to An PSP GO.
But how compare 3DS with Vita??? Impossible
PS VITA is a Very good Graphics amazing portable and with uniquE games. But 3DS i not see no one game with quality i Play Zelda with that N64 Polish Graphics, i Play SSF4 with background charaters stoped and FPs too low.
And The best of bad things. From 30 titles just a litle 4 or 8 games is good to be played like SSF4.
Well Wii U maybe be The Next Sega Saturn. I dont will spend my money if came An new Next Xbox Durango or An PS4.
Nintendo is Lame and Just Make a Fake Statistics to not lose to rivals and says then Xbox or PS3 is not most sold is impossible but if Anyone want to believe in Fake Statistics ok lets GO.
Tucanos to read and sorry my bad grammer im not american.

# Different marketsTheOnlyFool 2012-03-02 00:13
Pretty simply put, the 3DS and vita have a different market. The 3DS sales to mostly youth and adults who look for brain games, or Nintendo classics, Nintendo games have their own category.

The Vita on the other hand sales to mostly teens and adults, who look for high performance, realistic games, similar to those found on the PS3 or Xbox360.

One may own both a Vita, and a 3DS, because they have different game markets and general gaming experience.

For that reason, I don't believe they are competitors, and I believe that both can remain successful.

I'd say one of the main reasons a lot of PSP games failed, is because of its limited hardware... Developers simply couldn't make games do what they wanted to, so they were discouraged.

The PSVita's performance specs have most likely resolved that problem, for it can render games of near PS3 quality (in ratio to resolution of course).

PSP was the most powerful handheld of it's time. Saying it was limited is just making up excuses.

Id say the reason it failed is because of the mass piracy/ Developers probably say it as a huge loss of money if they developed games for it. And also because Sony did not do shit with the PSP.

# Evaluation: RepeatTheInvestigator 2012-03-05 18:48
the ps vita vs. 3ds is going to be a replay of history. The 3ds is going to prosper first because of the games and lower price. (games like mario kart 7 and conduit 3ds offer a variety) Eventually games are going to come out like MW3 for the vita and thats going to be the kick start it needs. Repeat of history! The ps vita is more powerful but the 3ds is a new experience. Take your pick, experience or power? (apple beats both boiii!!! lolz, i like apple stuff.)

# It actually failedJOEjoe 2012-03-05 19:26
ok, if you compare these sale numbers to the sales of the 3ds its horribly worse. The 3ds completely smashed this toy. Nintendo released and didn't get the number they wanted which is much was much higher. Sony released and got the lowest number out. Sony is happy anyway. Its probably gonna sell later i guess but right now its numbers are crap.
