Sony Sees Hope for Vita in 3DS Sales

It seems like every week we get a report on how poorly the PS Vita is doing in Japan. The story is consistent enough that I’ve considered not even reporting on it for the time being, since we’re basically making the same post once a week when the sales numbers roll in. But despite the device’s sales troubles, Sony believes there’s still strong demand for portable gaming devices.

Speaking to Edge, SCEI President Andy House noted that while the PS Vita doesn’t have its own strong numbers yet, the company feels comfortable using the success of the 3DS as evidence of a robust “gaming-primary” device market. It may seem strange to see Sony using Nintendo as a benchmark, but with sales like the Vita’s, the company is essentially grasping at straws.

Of course, this is Sony we’re talking about, so House couldn’t resist taking a shot at the 3DS as a casual device:

“What I think we've done is point to a market that really has started out with potentially casual games on other devices but now wants a deeper, or better, or more premier gaming experience.”

It’s amazing to me that Sony still manages to dismiss Nintendo devices, despite the fact that those devices continually outperform Sony’s products. Regardless, House is right about one thing – there’s still definitely a market for handheld games.

Handheld Nintendo games, anyway. Awww snap!

But seriously, what do you think of Sony using Nintendo’s success as an indication of the Vita’s future?

ABOUT SMARTPHONES/TABLETS VS. DEDICATED GAMING HANDHELDS:

When 3D GAMING WAS BORN (SUPER MARIO 64 AND ALL IT'S CLONES), MANY PEOPLE THOUGHT THAT 2D GAMING (2D FIGHTERS, 2D PLATTFORMERS) WAS IN A COUNTDOWN TO EXTINTION.....
MORE THAN 10 YEARS LATER (PRESENT TIME):
3D AND 2D COHEXIST TOGETHER.
UNCHARTED, AND RAYMAN ORIGINS.
SOUL CALIBUR 5 AND BLAZBLUE CONTINUM SHIFT.
WHY? BECAUSE BOTH OFFER DIFERENT EXPERIENCES.
THE SAME WILL HAPPEN TO SMARTPHONES AND DEDICATED HANDHELDS:

PS VITA:
IS ALL ABOUT GAMING.
EXCELLENT GAMES, EXCELLENT CONTROLS.
as MP3 player is not very handy because it doesn't fit in your pocket. but is good for listening your music while playing.}
as camera, pictures are not good.
but video playback is maybe the best due to it's screen.
as comunications device: it's not a phone.

SMARTPHONE/TABLETS:
IS ALL ABOUT COMUNICATIONS.
very good camera for picture and video recording.
very handy for MP3 (it fits in your pocket.
video playback: average. (small screen)
gaming: not good enough!

CONCLUSION:
HANDHELD GAMING DEVICES WILL NOT DIE AS LONG AS THERE ARE DEDICATED GAMERS.

you need a phone.
you want a gaming machine.

can't/don't want but both?

'XPERIA PLAY' MAY BE YOUR OPTION FOR NOW
(but don't expect the most rich and deep gaming experience available. just a handy option)

He rather should be saying: "I know we have poor sales, but because the 3DS is selling remarkably well, we will have good sales."

This does not compute.

considering there are only two handheld competitors...where else would they grab info regarding the market? especially when the other company is doing better.

It's sad when analysts knows more about a company's future than the company knowing it themselves.

Maybe they should hire these type of people.

It doesn't matter what Sony tries because NDS/3DS are just in completely different markets, Nintendo has kids and casual gamers and Sony has mainly teens to adults, and the average 3DS may own an iPhone but doesn't have a clue what it's capable of, where the majority of Vita owners do own a Smartphone and between the time they spend on Pc/Laptop, Home Console & Smartphone they just don't have the free hours for something like Vita anymore, and yeah i'm sure some people here will call me wrong because they do have the time but i'm talking about the majority of people here, so you just have to realise that the Psp was gonna die years ago even if Piracy didn't exist because the world's just changing whether you like it or not.

More people around the teenage to adult group are into investing in tablets or smart phones and using them as gaming.

Those who look at the Vita would rather get a console. Those who want the Vita probably owned or at least wished they a PSP. A lot of people got the PSP because it was easily modded to a custom firmware to pirate games.
