# Only 128mb of vram & 512mb of system ram?skygunner27 2011-08-17 22:26
Considering how long the PSP lastest and the ever so advancement of technology, I think they should have went for 256mb of vram and 1gb of unified system ram.

Sony will increase the RAM when the Vita hardware becomes cheaper to make.

We'll probably have to see if they will increase the RAM when they do a hardware revision. just like the old psp1000 and psp2000 models.

Half the RAM and VRAM of my computer. I'm jealous.

Also, good to see that 120FPS camera mode.

Yeah, I don't see how having more than 512MB would be much better. You would get tons of incompatible games or something. With the PSP it was 32 vs 64 MB and they could make it just for disc caching, but to give more that 512 would be begging for developers to do what some devs did with "DSi" only games.

But if they wanna release a version with 1GB of RAM and 256MB of VRAM, I have no objections as long as they remember to leave it vulnerable to homebrew exploits.

And yet again no Divx. One reason the Psp was so monumentally crappy as a media player, and of course Sony hasn't learned a lesson.

Divx is such and outdated and crappy codec that I'm actually happy PSV will not support it. It's about time everyone switched to H264.

# RE: RE: RE: Sony releases PS Vita tech specsMickle 2011-08-18 09:11
You probably right, but the fact is Divx is the most popular codec and pretty much every device i own supports it, but again Sony won't pay the licence fees meaning not many people will go through the hassle of converting all their videos for another Sony device with laughable media functions.

I'm sorry you have to transcode your porn before you put it on your PSP.

I say that because porn is the only video genre online that still uses divx. Youtube and gaming sites use MP4.

If your favourite source of videos doesn't use MP4, let them know that they should.

Nah all my Porn is encoded in an obscure MP4 codec, renamed & hidden in other folders so my family don't find it, but the fact Sony make no effort to offer support for anything but a few media formats just shows how Sony continually piss away easily achieved potential of their hardware and is the reason why after 6 years you still need Homebrew on Psp to get basic functionality almost every device offers as standard.

It's Sony's fault you use obscure codecs. Sure.

Hey the Porn might bring me up but i didn't bring up the subject. but the fact is my Dvd player plays Divx and is limited on other formats, and a lot of my older devices that don't receive FW updates can't play newer H.264 formats, so Sony really should at least offer the option of a few more formats, but it's like Sony are saying we'll give you a media player but it's gonna be complete shit because really you should be playing £30 games on this device and doing nothing else.

Sounds more like the problem is your other players.

H264 is a perfectly fine format.

Yeah and CDDA & MPEG2 are really, really inefficient formats but CDs & DVDs have to use it for compatibility, & Sony just have to realise the average person doesn't want to archive all their media in half a dozen different formats just cos Sony doesnt want to pay for Divx licensing, so there really is no justification to do a media player that can't play much media and just pisses off people who just want things simple.

Sorry Bub but not if you use DivX Plus HD. That uses H264 for encoding, supports AAC and uses MKV for container. And if you know MKV it means chapter support, multiple subs, multiple audio and other MKV features. So yeah, DivX would've been nice. Still sweet specs :3

If it uses H264 for video, and AAC for audio, and MKV for the container, it's not Divx.

People still use DivX? H.264 is far superior now by a long shot.

While you can still find DivX/XviD releases, a lot of releases are coming in the shape of MP4's using H.264 with AAC audio.

maybe i just read over the article too quickly but it kinda looked like there's no on-board flash memory... what kind of memory card slot will the vita have? it doesnt specify, will i be able to use my m2 or m3 from my psp or my go? from here it kinda makes me feel like the vita will only be "backwards compatible" if you buy sony's expensive new proprietary format cards which is a bit bothersome. i was really hoping that the go set the new standard for sony's support of download-able games with its 16gb of flash memory. even if this is not the case i am still super excited for the vita, and will not be deterred from buying a 3g model and a few games on launch day(possibly along with a nice 16gb memory stick  )! haha

Yup. Anything that supports TIFF is hackable.

# RE: RE: Sony releases PS Vita tech specsSuperNoob 2011-08-21 08:27
The PSP hack had an exploit that was found in the way th psp deals with overflow put into a tiff. I highly doubt an exploit will be found for quite a while on the vita since people know barely anything about it's insides yet. Also, sony doesn't allow the kind of tiff that is able to hold exploits since the updates to the PSP, and they won't allow them on th vita either probably.

tl;dr just because it supports tiff doesn't mean it's hackable.

Yeah, wasn't the PSP hacked 5 different times because of TIFF? I remember hearing about TIFF exploits from 2.0 and they are still having trouble with it.

my cricket phone has almost the same specs.
Whats the point of having 4 cores with such little ram.
the operating system is probably going to take up like 256mb.
And why does every post end up into a discussion of something else.

Don't like that the battery isn't replaceable. I'm not shelling out another 300 because the battery burns out.
