Sony Pulls Vita Games in Fear of Homebrew Hacks

If you’re a fan of homebrew software and hacking or modding consoles, today’s news will certainly be interesting to hear. It seems that a vulnerability in the PSP game Everybody’s Tennis allowed users to get at the core functionality of the PS Vita, which in turn allows for the running of homebrew software on the device. Party!

Sony is apparently not a huge fan of the homebrew community, and has yanked the game from the PSN store to prevent future hacks. This is the second such removal--the company pulled MotorStorm Arctic Edge a few weeks ago, and while no comment was made on the removal, the general consensus seems to be that the game had a similar weak spot.

According to the author of the hack, the vulnerability in both games only allows for the playing of homebrew software—not for accessing pirated Vita games. The letter, in which the creator details the hack, is actually pretty hilarious.

Did anyone get a run at their Vita before Everybody’s Tennis got pulled?

These exploits give access to the PSP functionality of a VITA. Not core functionality and in it's current state will never give access to pirated VITA games or VITA CFW.

no it wasnt vita core but this one had a realy big hole .
bigger than arctic edge in fact because this hole fully reset the psp emulator core.
so no it wasnt the vita one but the hole was so big you can with it run psp minecraft (in motorstorm it wasnt possible) ,gba emulator, and dark alex psp iso loader!
making you able to boot any psp backup! (making the ones on ps store useless) this was the main reason.
if you dont trust me look the rtatchen and clank gameplay video on psvita

"but the hole was so big you can with it run psp minecraft (in motorstorm it wasnt possible)"

PSP Minecraft was editted to play through the exploit.

The exploit was the same.

To be honest the only thing I want out of my vita is homebrew, I don't want games. I just want the device unlocked and let the college kids write me some fun useful apps. I could care less about psn or the games.

It's not that I'm against their games in anyway it's just that they get boring and homebrew creativity tickles me just right.

I`m yet to buy one, and maybe I should be a little supportive if I ever want a 4G model in the next 2 years. Though if I have some extra cash and there`s a working exploit I might be poised to buy a wifi version.

I`m not a pirate I just like to use pspDisp to watch movies off my PC or play SC2. My hopes are that once homebrew is let out the gates that a similar app will arise, maybe working over 3G. Who doesn`t love the power of their pc in their pocket? I know the tablets have some apps that allow this but you can't beat the feel of a controller. I have played fallout on my psp with my 360 controller, was pretty awesome.

if you don't care about native Vita games or Apps but only care for crummy homebrew apps, how about buying an Android tablet then... seems to cut out the "Sony is trying to stop me from hacking D:"-middleman right out of the equation.

I mean, why buy a device if you want to use it for something that is was not designed for, while there are other, much better suitable devices out there... seems kinda backwards.

Sony Pulls Vita Games, huh? What? Where? They pulled a PSP game. Todd B, I would assume you would know that since you elaborated about it in the article. This is very misleading. Aside that, it is just one game that you're talking about, right? So "Vita Games" should be "PSP Game".

Stupid jerks, Homebrew isn't the problem, the Homebrew Community actually brings a whole new world to each device.

What's the problem? Piracy.

Dumb Dumb Sony, the more they try the more they fail, haven't they learnt that lesson yet? This is just a Psp mode hack which is just a virtual environment and probably gives no real access to the Vita, and if they were smart they'd just let the hackers play happily with this like they did with OtherOS and might take years to get hacked, but typical Sony are again pissing everyone off and the hackers are gonna find any way possible to hack Vita.

They're most likely doing this so that you can't play free PSP games.

Because if you could, you might never touch the Vita games, and thus the console would die.

That's probably also why they removed Linux from PS3.

Because if hackers took the restrictions away from Linux, they might have been able to play free PC games and ignored most PS3 games.

Japan's the only place Psp games are worth playing and they actually honest enough to pay for games. The problem is if Sony just gave the hackers a little hope of fully hacking Vita through that Psp mode hack it should slow them down, because it worked for OtherOS and also works for 360 Jtag, but Sony's just too stupid to realise this and treat all Homebrewers like they Pirates and not just block every hack, they'll also take legal action to show they serious.

derpa statement.
why spend all that money on a vita when you can already do that with a PSP?
YES, thats right, PSP is fully hacked.

of course you going to play vita games even if the vita plays pirated PSP games, because if you werent going to touch vita games, you should of got a PSP E1000

Well, what you said does make sense.

However, what I meant was, that one of the reasons why Sony would block this emulator hack is, that by doing so, it would cause either:

1. people to buy Vita games/PSN games because of boredom.
2. people to buy a PSP, PS2, etc. because of boredom.

Note: By people, I mean, people who bought a Vita to play free Vita games once it's hacked and are using the emulator hack to pass time until then.
