Sony: PS Vita is our easiest platform yet

Admits previous PlayStation platforms have been complex.

"It had very, very high potential and peak performance, but programming for the PlayStation platforms was a huge challenge for game developers,” admits SCE Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida in a recent interview with Develop when quizzed about Sony’s previous gaming platforms, specifically the PS3.

Yoshida then pointed the blame to its former SCE chief Ken Kutaragi.

“In a sense, Kutaragi was enjoying challenging game developers,” said Yoshida. "He was especially challenging the top programmers in the world to come up with something amazing to make use of the performance of each iteration of the PlayStation platforms.

“That was very good – it was great – for the teams with engineers who liked the challenge, but the world has now changed, and today there is a much larger community of developers,” added Yoshida.

“The focus has shifted to be less about getting the most out of the hardware, to be about having a very smooth production process. That’s because now it involves so many more people to make one game.”

He went on to add: “Development efficiency has become more and more important."

"When it comes to ease of development, the Vita is a platform with which we’ve been very mindful of that,” stated Michael Denny, senior vice president of SCE Worldwide Studios.

“In terms of smoothing the development process, certainly what the Vita offers is close to that of the PSP, and with some of the help we’re giving to developers, I would say it is the easiest and most well supported platform yet.

“In terms of performance, and the graphics power and programmable shaders and so on, what you can get out of it is far closer to PS3. It’s a great contrast of ease of development to the output you get from the system.”

WWS chief technology officer Richard Lee agrees with Denny’s assertion about the new platform.

“We made every effort to make it as easy as possible,” said Lee.

“I think we took the experiences from PS3, and decided that we wanted to go out there with a great developer environment that is compatible with the third party tools that developers normally use.

“There’s never been anything like this on a PlayStation platform. It is a great development environment, and the stuff that is available before launch is really good in terms of helping developers with performance tuning an so on.”

SN Systems, the developing group responsible for the PS Vita's dev kit also stated recently that third party developers will have an easy time creating games for the new hardware.

Having a console which is easy to program for will lead to better quality games in a smaller period of time and all, but I kind of enjoyed the fact that some of their older consoles were hard to program for...

Although this is a pure personal thing, I liked to see games gradually increase in quality and graphics and what not over the lifespan of a console... Where is the fun when a console is already maxed out a year after it is released ?

Maybe because better graphics don't make better games?

Great gameplay makes a great game, adding great graphics makes an epic game.

Whenever you're not worried about graphics and just gameplay, then yeah, usually.

their easiest platform yet? I'm gonna wait until I see how many games are gonna be made for it.

In my opinion PS1 is still the easiest platform, the fact that it is the first console to use compact disc and 3d graphics it did not stop it from having 2000+ games made at the end of its lifespan. Originally made by kutaragi for nintendo to be easy to program for but nintendo refused it and that's how the sony playstation was born.

First console with 3D graphics and CDs? LOL no, the PlayStation relied heavily on pre-existing tech and concepts but found a way to sell it better than others i.e. the 3DO, and pushed for 3D games from developers which helped it trump the Saturn early on (though Castlevania:Sot N almost never came about because of the policy).

Back on topic, a large market share gave the PS 2000+ titles, not ease of development; that would better be applied to the pc (if you include flash, browser games, etc.)

okay I was wrong on how I meant it being the first cd :P but it was the console which made the CD a popular format for storing games due to it having a very large library of games, other competitors back then still used cartridges ex. SNES, Genesis, Atari Lynx, nintendo 64. True there was the amiga, 3do and saturn which were cd based, the saturn was hard to program for unlike the playstation, and the amiga and 3do did not get much support from devs unlike the playstation did.

And just remember Playstation would have never existed if Sony hadn't stole the project from Nintendo. And if Playstation never existed we might still have Sega consoles and maybe more than just 3 consoles to choose from.

hey now sony didn't steal it from nintendo, nintendo scrapped kutaragi's project which is why it went to sony, not unless the console history written online on dozens of site was all a lie :P I could be wrong

Well you know what i meant, they didn't steal it as in breaking contract with Nintendo but when they dropped the plan for a Snes Cd addon Sony just decided to take all that work and use it for theirself, so Playstation does owe it's life to Nintendo.
