Sony Computer Entertainment Europe senior development manager Simon Benson has pride in his work. Whilst I'm not a big fan of the work 3D has done, but I am a big fan of the independent spirit when the going gets tough and Sony has let the 3D flag fly saying how cheap the current technology is.
Benson explained the amount of time and effort it takes for the current gen to make 3D games. "It can literally be the render programmer spending a couple of weeks manipulating it. Particularly if a game already has split screen in it, just take that mode of the game and reauthor it to deliver really high quality 3D. So often it's the case of it doesn't even hit the radar of whether we should or shouldn't, it can just be done."
Benson talked to Game Industry.biz about how a lot of games currently being developed sometimes cost only "half a per cent of the overhead", whilst 3D may not be the way to go for some companies, I think Sony has a stronghold on the technology.
Being pioneers of the technology however, 3D is being campaigned their next handheld is being pushed back a few months missing the Christmas holidays in the Western world. Whilst early reports claimed the Vita might be out by Halloween, a 2012 release is more believable according to the Associated Press. Sony Executive VP Kaz Hirai confirmed the report. I'm just wondering why in 2011, when we have the internet, airmail, games about infidelity and sheep and awesome puzzles, that releasing internationally is such a problem...

If I remember correctly, they don't like Lulz.
I believe they might end up using built-in 3D though, as it is becoming the new "in style" thing and would probably boost sales.
I personally don't care for 3D however and find this news saddening seeing as I wanted to get one of these to replace my PSP.

For them to launch in more countries this year it would require the production of millions of units per country. Do you really think they want to miss the holiday season? They tried to get enough units produced and they fell short. Really no ones fault when natural disasters play a part.

Right, weren't they slightly hit? I could've promised it was in a different region of Japan but oh well.
