Sony Aims for Vita Flash Support

The brawl between Flash and mobile developers has flashed hot over the last few years, with Adobe recently announcing it would discontinue mobile development to focus on HTML-5 solutions instead. The announcement seemed like a victory for Apple, which for years has resisted bringing Flash applications to its phones and tablets. Flash is still a major part of most people’s web experience, and the software enables thousands of internet users to watch videos and engage interactive content.

Sony seems to disagree with Apple on the subject of Flash’s usefulness, and is currently in negotiations with Adobe to bring the service to the PlayStation Vita. On the one hand, it’s a savvy business move that ensures Vita owners will have access to as much online content as possible. On the other, Adobe’s recent shift in focus to HTML-5 hints that Sony’s push for Flash support may have only been savvy if executed five years ago.

Sony execs have confirmed that they’re still working with Adobe to try to find a solution that will work for both companies, but the tone of the interview doesn’t exactly inspire confidence. Muneki Shimada, development head of Sony’s division two, indicated that negotiations are ongoing and Sony hasn’t “given up.” Something could be lost in translation here, but it certainly sounds like Sony is dealing with an intransigent group of Adobe developers reluctant to develop their software on another device.

Either way, the future of Flash on both the Vita and on mobile platforms is in doubt. If negotiations are successful, however, Vita would earn one more selling point to help put it ahead of its competitors.

Do you think Flash support is an important feature for a handheld gaming device?

Well I think that Apple are wrong for not putting flash on there I devices. But the stupid thing is, is that Apple charge you for some app s that you would usually be able to play for free with flash. I think if Sony where to put flash on there PSV it would not only be a contender against other gaming devices but also a contender against other I Devices and tablets.

dont forget flash was the first reason of honeycomb crash.
on psp the flash feature was almost useless due to the ram that was using this feature (it still cause problems in the ps3 browser)
and adobe wasnt able to implement hardware acceleration of flash11 on mobile device (it still use software and it is still slow and heavy).
when it work,it is nice but for the moment flash mobile has to mutch failures rate to be reliable.

If Sony had put this on the PSP maybe we would see a better future for flash. Sony's late to the show. I want flash but whats the point if the browser sucks as much as the one on the ps3.

The ps3 browser came with an outdated version of flash, as I am able to stream media off of the internet which requires flash. All so You Tube uses flash for playing there videos.

The real questions is are they going to provide a fully functional web browser with the Vita or another gimped browser with very limited browsing capability again. Flash is useless if the web browser sucks.

Bad call , flash sucks period! HTML 5 is the future.
I hate ads and now we will have the 5' screen full of them.
Hope Firefox + Adblock can now be developed for vita.

ha, good luck retards
HTML-5 will NOT kill flash, trust me, I should know, I code both.
HTML-5s "Flash killer", the video tags are a mess, and require the correct codecs to be downloaded. Flash does not.
Flash also has 98% machine penetration rate, whereas theres only a few browsers that fully support HTML 5.
Also note that HTML-5 is only becoming standard in 10 years.
Flash is only shit if its made by bad devs who put more effort into animation than optimization.

Isn't it up to the Browser developer to or not to support flash? I don't see Opera Mobile dropping support for a feature just because it isn't "relevant" anymore. If that were true, no mobile browser would support BMP or java.

Now imagine this then... ads not coming as flash anymore but in a HTML5 format...

Don't blame flash for ads, ads will be all over the internet, whether it is in Flash or HTML5...

Html 5 may be the way of the future for internet, how ever most media streamed over the internet still requires Flash in order to be watched. So if you eliminate Flash from the Vita's web browser you will have limited abililty to watch videos. I am speaking in the case of Windows who's web browsers still require Flash to be fully interactive with the web.

What Adobe failed to see is that flash is a platform on its own(ie. it's the app store's competitor). Just look at all those flash games online. They're mistake is they focused on flash videos.

Well that's a dumb move! Adobe has already publicly announced that v11 will be the LAST mobile version. Adobe is dropping all mobile flash support.

Good luck with that one Sony!!!

What you said makes no sense. The point is, in a years time, flash developers will have moved to newer and better things of which v12 will be one of them. They WILL NOT be interested in supporting an older version.

Therefore, use your brain and you'll quickly see that DEVELOPMENT SUPPORT for something that that has ZERO SUPPORT will be rather low.

html-5 may be the future but we are talking about NOW!! the PS vita have a great 5inch LED screen it would be a waste if it could not watch any flash videos online with such great functionality. for now they should add flash and switch over to html-5, all of u wanted ads free but do u guys even know that its because of all these ads that are paying the websites and keeping it alive, ads will be there regardless of flash or not so dont make it sound like its all flash's fault.
