Downloadable games appears to be much cheaper than its retail counterpart.

Some new details about Sony's next gen portable today. According to a report from ASCII (via Andriasang), an SCEJ rep has confirmed that the 3G version of PlayStation Vita will have a 20MB capped limit for 3G downloads, though the rep added that this value could change in the future. This could mean that downloading full games will likely only possible via WiFi, which is not bad, since 3G download speeds are too slow anyway.

Now onto the pricing scheme of the Vita. It appears like the downloadable version of Vita games will have a much lower price point than its package counterpart. As reported by Andriasang, Square Enix has officially revealed the Japanese pricing for their upcoming Vita launch title Army Corps of Hell. The retail version of the game will be priced at  ¥4,980 while the download version on the other hand will carry a ¥3,990 price tag. Sony hasn't said anything about the pricing scheme of the Vita games yet, so this is a big change of direction, unless its only Square Enix specific.

The PlayStation Vita will arrive in Japan this December. We, on the other hand will have to wait until next year to get our hands of the PSP successor.

Personally I would rather have a hard copy of my games unless I could store a backup copy of the digitally downloaded game on my computer, but I'm 99% sure thats not going to happen. Somehow downloading a possibly 2GB game when I have a craving to play it doesn't seem so viable. Especially here in Canada where the ISPs put a 100GB cap on my bandwidth. I agree tho that they make the downloaded version cheaper is nice. I guess I'm too old fashioned?

Wow, 100GB? My cap is 250GB with Comcast in the US, and I often creep pretty close to that.

You're so lucky living in America! Here in the UK if I go over 50GB in 30 days then my speed will be throttled to something close to dial up. This is commonplace in the UK and packages like this are advertised as "unlimited". 50GB is the highest package with most ISPs in non-fibre areas (majority of the UK does not have fibre yet) - my parents have a 10GB/month cap on their package!

It's less of a reason to buy the WiFi version and more of just a reason not to pay extra for the 3G version.

I don't mind the digital versions, but I think i will still buy retail versions just so i can trade it in at a later time just to get some money back for a trade in. But who knows, maybe the money I get back from a trade may still be lesser than what I could have saved buying a digital version. It all really depends. If I save 10 bucks for a digital version off of retail, and i only get like 6 bucks back for a trade it, digital it is!

I think it's likely that if there's hard copies AND cheaper digital copies, the physical copy would trade in for more, since people like you and I would actually want the physical one. Down the road at least, it'll pay off.

This should be the way all downloadable version of games ahould work out. Im happy its cheaper. And if it works in a similar way as the psn store game share then downloading onto a diff one should b no problem incase ur original vita is broken. Then again this could bring up problems

the reason they did this is because they're making a compromise with company's like AT&T to get vita its own special data plan, if they didn't then vita would have to use the normal 2GB a month data for cell phones, which would get killed if you played online all the time. this looks like the 3G is made primarily to sync save games and play games online, which is really why i wanted the 3g version in the first place. i expect a similar plan as japan, where you pay for minutes online, not how much data you use, and you can refresh the plan by buying prepaid cards.

Looks like it's time to use an original iPhone model to haxorz up some unlimited 3G data, then haxorz up the vita and port 3G unrestrictor. :P

Geohot! Stop fucking up Facebook and come fix the Vita!
