For those of you that may not be so hardware savy, in simple terms a debug firmware is more or less the same operating system that you use on your system without all of the added security that keeps a gamer from playing any unsigned content they want. This particular software number is OS version 1.69.1 and it has its own open and unique set of features that help developers make the games that we all know and love.

Aside from allowing unsigned content to run, one of the most interesting features about this debug firmware resides in its precautionary feature to make sure the software doesn't get into the wrong hands. As a protection, every ninety days, the system must be registered with a unique key by Sony. Any failure to do so will result in a bricked system. In terms of hacking, this means that the company has taken a huge step in the right direction to make sure casual users aren't given more control than they need.
Lastly, 1.69.1 debug also allows developers to fake certain hardware functions as well such as 3G connections and region codes. There is also even a button swap feature which swaps the X and O keys in an effort to provide a more accurate representation of how a game will be played in other areas of the globe. Whether we see it again in public or not, Vita debug is certainly an interesting little OS.
