PlayStation Vita is a 'car wreck' - Heavy Iron Studios |
Listed in: News Tags: Heavy Iron Studios, Sony
While all other publishers are dishing out raves for the yet-to-be-released PlayStation Vita, one developing studio, Heavy Iron, isn't mincing words about what they really think about it.
In an interview with Gamesindustry, president Lyle Hall gave some choice words on Sony's latest handheld.

"If people aren't willing to pay US$ 249 for a Nintendo 3DS why would they pay US$ 299 for Vita?" he started. "People don't want to carry more than one thing in their pocket, that's why Android and iPhone have done so well, they are devices of choice, they offer multiple functions outside of gaming. People don't want it."
Matthew Seymour chimes in, and says, "With all due respects to Sony and Vita, it's a car wreck. And how about Xperia Play? I'd love to pull up the numbers on that."
They did have something good to say about it, although that really, in the general picture, does not really help in their final conclusion.
"The technology is sweet," conceded Hall. "I'm a huge fan of mobile technology. But I just don't know there's a market out there any more for the hardware. I can't see why you would want to put a device out that only does games. The consumer has spoken. We wanted to see that world exist -- more players, more opportunities for us -- but at the same time people don't want that. Unless there's a super technology paradigm shift it's not going to shift back."
Forecasts for the future of the PlayStation Vita has been varied, with analysts believing in its good fortune, while critics saying it will have a hard time breaking into the market unless they lower the price.

The only thing worse than an uneducated journalist is a blog that should know better that reposts it as news.

I want that >:(
I have an EVO 3D, but even as powerful as it is I don't want to use it as my gaming device. It's my smartphone. Also I want real buttons! Sure I could have gotten the XPeria Play, but then it lacks in what I wanted from a smartphone. I rather have a really good smartphone and a really good gaming handheld then something that does both just ok.

Let me think, because you maybe don't want to kill your mobile phones battery so you can actually use said phone to, I dunno, CALL PEOPLE?
And the Vita is just a tiny bit more powerful than any phone on the market (By tiny, I mean a LOT of course).
Also, what about when people go on holiday and can't take their PS3 with them? Vita is the next best thing. Literally.
Really wish people would keep retarded thoughts to themselves, like the analysts calling for a price cut on something that hasn't even been released yet.

Not only thta, there will be tablets out which are stronger then the smartphones at that moment.
The games are allrdy better now, so what do you think is gonna happen?
People will take an extra bag to carry around 3 gaming machines? I think not.
All next generation portable gaming devices will fail.

While the graphics may not be up to par, mobile games lack the depth that dedicated machines have, and they always will.

case in point, Smart phones take WAY!!! longer to have there hardware updated and a new one come out.
Just take a look at the Iphone.
PSP 2004 = CPU 333mhz under clocked to 222hmz
Iphone 2007 = CPU 620mhz under clocked to 412mhz
And the fact is if you look at the Iphone 4 it's not even close to the Vita's power
Iphone 4 = CPU 1ghz under clocked to 800mhz
Vita = 4'cores running at 2ghz or better
And that's just the CPU's we are talking about, If you factor in Controls,GPU,St orage-space,battery life, price, etc etc
The Vita will win every time, Sure Smart phones are fine for "Talking" or web surfing Or even a small App type game, BUT playing a REAL game on a smart phone is just wrong and dumb.

Double et cetera, for when one et cetera just isn't enough.

The end point is that I (along with most gamers) buy a device based on the games on them, not the power of the device itself.
And at the end of the day, those smartphones will NEVER have the games we play on them in the same way they'd be on dedicated gaming devices.
The markets the 3DS and Vita aim for are not the same market that smartphones aim for...and it's for that reason I'm sure the Vita will succeed anyway

Sure, games such as Infinity blade showcased what mobile phones could do, but understand that it took mobile phones almost 5 years to catch up to what the PSP or the NDS could do in terms of raw power.
And with the current rat race going on for raw, unprecedented processing power in these devices, mobile phones is severely out classed and out matched when pit against Vita in gaming capabilities.
Remember, casual games only makes up for a small percentage of revenue in games. What truly pays is to have hardcore gamers on board. What the smart-phones and tablets could do, is still lacking when paired up with specific game consoles, e.g PSP and NDS.
Also, Heavy Iron Studios might have churned out some games, but what such flawed statement, I doubt we'll see them progressing far in the future.
Real gamers would prefer real gaming machines compared to casual gaming machines such as smart phones and tablets.
Remember Tablets is primarily used as a form of digital organizer whilst smart phones is used for a plethora of reasons such as Maps, pocket organizers and making phone calls, primarily away from gaming.
And even with higher end phones coming, you could never beat dedicated gaming consoles when you could easily dedicate 90-95% of the total processing power to gaming.

Vita runs at most 800/1ghz mhz. 200/250 mhz a core.
So get your facts right.
Reply
But i don't think a Game made for PS3 could run on a core 4' 800mhz, Just sounds un-realistic to me
And the facts of the Smart phones not having good controls still remain, Plus the lack of GPUs in Smart phones.

Have you toyed with vita?
Were you even briefed on the actual product specs?

i bought my HTC HD2 about a year ago (last december). and from then to now this is what has been released that is better.
Droid 3 - 1GHz Dual core processor
Motorola Atrix - 1GHz Dual core processor
HTC Sensation - 1GHz Dual Core Processor
EVO 3D - 1.2GHz Dual core processor
Tablets
HTC Flyer - 1.5 GHz Processor
HTC EVO View 4G - 1.5 GHz Processor
Motorola XOOM - 1GHz Dual core processor

Im not saying that their more powerful than the vita, but its going to get here a lot faster than anyone expected. All of these phones/tablets arrived in less than a year, and all of these have dual core processors. The iphone 4 isnt the only phone out their
All phones need are better GPU'S
storage space?
16GB + is pretty good for a phone and also for a hand held
just for the record i use my phone to play ps1, snes, nes, gba, and nintendo 64, i can also run dc, and nds (not great but it runs ;)

if you want to see were im getting the specs from here it is

and keep in mind i wasnt going to name every phone

But i still don't think smart phones are going to be into the quad core CPU's any time soon, Maybe in the next 2-3 years
And the big problem i see in Smart phones is, "Real media" for the games, I am not a fan of Just download for the 60$ game you just got, I like something real in my hand that i know if my device/storage messes up i don't need to re-download the game just to play it.
And again the controls on a smart phone just can't hold water the a real games systems controls, Noway i am going to try and play a FPS or any games for that matter on a smart phone.
Heck it's touchy just trying to play NES games on a Iphone lol, Not for the lack of power but for the lack of controls.

I thought it played music, videos, showed pictures, had internet, and played games.
This guy sounds like a smartphone fanboy.
The only ways portable gaming will die are:
1. Gaming industry collapses.
2. Smartphones become advanced to the point where your mind controls it.
I don't see either of these happening anytime soon.

I have no faith in gaming on mobile phones. I haven't seen a single good game for the smartphones, unless you take into account PSP ports like FFTA. And no, Angry Birds and Fruit Ninja are not AAA games... Vita will sell if it has good games. Period.
Reply
Sure I play games on my phone but a touchscreen phone with no buttons there is no way I would want that to be a dedicated gaming device. I have every intention of buying a Vita, in fact I already have it pre-ordered.

There's just something about dedicated controls that means things like the iPhone won't ever truly replace a handheld system.
Think Kinect vs Move/WiiMote. Physical controls bring realism to games and most core gamers will want that.

I still would much prefer dedicated keys for gaming on the go. Don't get me wrong, games on mobiles are getting dam good now but they just don't feel the same.
And I love my PSP purely because it's hacked. That kinda makes up for the lack of good games!

And especially if its of AAA Quality.
Don't bring free games into concept here unless you clearly understood the idea of ingame purchases.
If a game is littered with ingame purchases and ads, I doubt anyone would want to keep the game for long either.
Also, PSP isn't only the best seller in Japan, but pretty much all that of Asia.
Remember, the biggest market is still based in Asia, and if you want to conquer the market, you better target specifically to that of the bigger market.
Sure Piracy might be a rampant, but when it comes to hardware, pirates could almost nothing about it.
Remember, some companies charge a higher price for their games for a reason, and that reason would usually be for the coverage of maintenance costs and the development costs.
Ever questioned why some parts of the apps that you used on the phone is littered with "advertisements"?
Also, have anyone ever questioned why would there be in-game purchases?
It's a way for the developers to earn a keep of their own whilst they continue with the development of the games they have.
Honestly, I would rather pay for a 'full' game, without any in-game purchases and then purchasing DLCs at a later stage rather than having to get a partial game for free, paying the heck out for what's supposed to be given to us in the first place and still end up paying for any future 'DLCs' or Addons!

I have a PSP i use it to play games and ocasionally do tons of differents stuff, just cuz the PSP does it, as much as anyother Iphone, HTC, Motorolla or any other device... the only thing tha a PSP ins't capable of is to make real phone calls. So why would i buy PSVITA? Simple is a updated version of a thing that i love the PSP, just like i bought one Iphone 4g when i already had a Iphone 2g
