PlayStation Vita Data Cap Issue Looms over U.S. Release

Much hype has been made over the fact that Sony’s new handheld, the PlayStation Vita, is a fully 3G-compatible device that allows gamers to connect to any nearby AT&T signal (assuming you’re paying for the contract). The “always-on” connectivity of the device is considered one of the major selling points of the more expensive 3G version, which runs $299.99 compared to the Wi-Fi-only version’s price of $249.99.

While gamers may see 3G connectivity as a method for downloading games on the go or competing with friends online (though the thought of 3G latency makes me shudder), Sony recently revealed that the Vita, at least in Japan, has an insane download cap of 20MB per month. This means that the 3G functionality of the device is essentially useless for online gaming and game downloads, unless you’re playing for an incredibly short period of time or downloading a game that was originally released on Super Nintendo.

To put this cap in perspective, most PSP games run 200-500 megabytes, with original PlayStation games falling in around the same general area. Nintendo DS games fall between 16 and 128MB, and they’re noticeably less pretty than current PSP titles. Even if you’re using the Vita to download songs, you’re only going to be able to download seven or eight before you smash into the data cap.

Of course, this data cap only applies to Japanese players – there’s no official statement from Sony regarding what American gamers can expect from the console. The only thing Sony has said officially is that there is nothing official to say, which means a data cap may or may not be included with the Vita here in the States (and in other nations).

This, combined with concerns over the Vita 3G’s low 128Kbps down/64Kbps up connection speed put its position as the first single-purpose 3G gaming device at serious risk.

Are you planning on picking up a Vita 3G? Are you concerned over a possible data cap?

No, it's 20 MB per download from the PSN store, like iPhone. Any file bigger than that will need to be downloaded via Wifi.

The per-month data cap is dependent on how much you pay

I knew that was it, these people should realy think before they go apeshit like that, its more like you have a 10MB file size limit on your email, but im still not sure...the 128kb is pretty horrid speed...thats like .05G instead of 3g....

"that allows gamers to connect to any nearby AT&T signal"
Huh? It's 3G. Why would I need a specific provider for that?

You don;t need a specific provider. It's just that AT&T is the only provider confirmed to be offering plans for the Vita.

Learn to get your information correct before you go posting an article like this... it's not 20mb / month. That would be retarded as Any person could use that up simply by watching a youtube video. it's a 20mb DOWNLOAD CAP. AKA you can only download things with a file size not exceeding 20mb while on 3G. If you want to download something any larger you will have to use wifi to download it.
Which in my opinion is perfectly reasonable. If you are looking to download a full game of like, 600mb-2gb on a 3G network that will likely exceed any plan offered and you will end up paying far more in data fees than what you actually paid for the game.
If you argue, "well I don't have wifi, how do I download games if I can't use 3G!" Then you need to get your ass in gear with the times and either, A) get a wifi connection, B) learn what a wifi hotspot, internet cafe or your local library are or, C) with or without neighbors permission find a way to leech of their wifi.

Simple as that.

128kbps & 20mb per download is just truly pitiful numbers when Sony consider themselves at the forefront of digital distribution, i mean i'm still not convinced yet that i want a Vita because it's gonna fail but by how much you just can't judge til at least 6 months after release, and that's when I'll decide if i want it. And anyway i'm not wasting the money on the 3G version cos i have an unlimited 3mbps data plan on my phone so I'll just hope the access point feature works with Vita so i don't have to burn money on an extra data plan.

Idk if the publisher of this post has actually played a game with the 3G connection. But let me tell you this, I can run Starcraft 2 and League of Legends with my 3G connection (USB tethered my phone) with my latency being around 80-120ms EVERY time. So don't make false assumptions, that's all I'm saying. 3G multiplayer is indeed possible and will happen for the Vita, which I am happy about

That's nice for your phone, but your phone isn't the Vita.

You miss the point. His phone isn't a gaming device and is using standard 3G. If he can play games that would imo use more bandwidth than Vita titles with such a good latency, you'd think it would allow for some pretty good online play from virtually anywhere.

No he's saying he can use his phone's 3G to tether and play online games and i can do exactly the same By tethering to Pc and my phone would give any game the same 360kbps speed and play some games pretty well, but if i put my Sim in Vita all that extra speed gets pissed away because some dumb fuck at Sony thought 128/64kbps was gonna be enough, where i can't see that fast enough for online gaming and 20mb download limits makes that 3G a completely pointless option, so the whole 3G idea is just typical Sony dumbness and just technology for technology's sake.

Never underestimate the ability of people to complain about things.

I'm complaining because Sony has pissed away the potential of something that could have been really good, i mean the limited hardware means you can never play online with 3G, and you can't download any games either, so exactly what's left? maybe you can logon to PSN to buy games but you still have to wait til you find a Wifi hotspot anyway to download, and as always the internet browser will be pitifully bad and restricted on speed, so that 3G is almost totally pointless and like i said, technology for technology's sake.
