Phantasy Star Online carved out a popular little corner of the still-young MMO market when it was released on Dreamcast back in 2000/2001. Fans of the series, which has a convoluted series of sequels and iterations that makes reading its Wikipedia page a complete nightmare, were happy to learn that Sega had plans for a proper sequel to the online version of the game, due for PCs in 2012.

But wait, that’s not all! During PS Vita Game Heaven, a web broadcast conducted by Sony last night, it was confirmed that Phantasy Star Online 2 would also be making its way to PS Vita systems. Not only is the game coming to Vita, but both the Vita and PC versions connect to the same servers—you’ll be able to access and use your characters from both systems.

Vita has been touted for its “revolutionary” design, and being able to play and manage your MMO characters while on the bus or a road trip is exactly the sort of thing the handheld needs to deliver on this promise. We’ll have to wait to see how the whole thing plays out.

Phantasy Star Online 2 is due sometime in 2012—no release date on either version has been announced. And, sadly, the title remains a Japan exclusive.

What do you think of Phantasy Star on your Vita?

Is this different from PSO v2.0 for Dreamcast?

It's an entirely new game, it's literally PSO 2 (not version 2.0) http://www.pso-world.com/ has lots of relevant information, and is generally the best place to look for anything Phantasy Star related.

Aside from that, this is a very pleasant surprise for me. Two things I've been watching that I thought weren't related coming together- it's a beautiful thing.

It's an MMO so it's gonna suck my wallet dry even after or IF I buy it. which probably that I won't get it before someone sets up a private server for it.

What I really want it to be is an story driven JRPG that has an optional Online co-op function to it kind of like the Phatasy Star Portable.

But that fact that it's an MMO kind of kills it for me, I am huge fan of the Phantasy Star series

Dude, it's the same styled game as PSO and PSU/P, offline single player and multiplayer(not on the DC version) with the option to go online. The MMO label is misleading but there aren't enough games of it's nature with online play to justify a new category.

You wanna know the difference between PSO's and PSU's story telling? Cutscenes.

# Great. Just great.NickyP 2012-03-13 16:39
The sequel to my most favorite game of all time, on the system I absolutely refuse to buy because it's a piece of garbage that wants to overcharge me and lock me out of my own content.

Fan-freaking-tastic.
