Another Vita Video, This Time Revealing All

Ó

Yesterday I posed an article with a video showing the Vita being unboxed, and while there’s no pretty PR girl presenting this, Sony now have an ‘Official Tour’ video up, exploring the Vita and it’s capabilities.

This video is a meaty 12 minutes long and features some occasional in-studio shots of games in development which is always nice to see. All the hardware is listed out, along with talks on how games are downloaded, updates are live and even cross platform game saves between the Vita and the PS3.

The biggest aspect of the Vita is of course, connectivity. Apple and smartphones have definitely set the standard for mobile devices and Sony aren’t going to be left behind, with over half the talks on the Vita are regarding online networks, online multiplayer, downloadable games and 3G.

Also in the video are the apps that come preloaded with the Vita, including the HTML5-enabled web browser.

Have you decided on your Vita package yet, or are you waiting this one out?

It's said both ways. It's easier to say O-Lead for some.

I'm disappointed they didn't mention FLAC.

And I'm still rather concerned about the fact that the biggest Memory Stick we can buy for this is 32GB. That's just 16 2GB games. Less if you keep music and videos on the Vita. Which won't be a problem if they Vita's game library is on par with the PSP, but if they do do something better, 16 games is not enough.

I know I can just back up what I'm not using on my PC or PS3, but my main concern is that developers will start making games that are smaller. I imagine there might be some people who would think twice about buying a game digitally if they didn't have the space for it. So developers might get in the habit of making games with less data so that happens less, even if it's a Game Card release. So we might end up with a bunch of 500MB, or even 100MB, releases even though it would have been just as easy to release a 2GB game. I hope to see 4, and maybe 8GB games in the lifetime of the Vita. And I hope companies will be brave enough to put those on the digital market, without modifying them and ruining it for everyone else, just so they can take the safe route.

It's kinda weird when the comment box allows for more characters than the article itself.

The problem is that there are no more unlimited 3G plans. Luckily, I got grandfathered in and have been streaming music for most of the day. And now with the emergence of 4G networks, I don't see any reason why I should bother with the 3G PSV.

Maybe till a 4G PSV comes out? If not, it makes more sense to me to just get the wifi, get a stupid wifi hotspot package with my 4G phone which costs $20 more, and is unlimited.

I hope that most of the games would have updates for cross platform. That is the only attraction for me.

If you feel that way, then a handheld like this won't fulfill your needs. I'd stick to a console if I were you.

A Console weighs several pounds and requires at least 12V of DC current at 1-4A. I dare say a console would fulfill my "needs" even less. Not to mention the screen and speakers I would have to carry around.

Then don't complain about the limitations of a handheld device. Yes, they can add internal memory and all that neat stuff, but it was increase production costs and less profitable for Sony.

Increase internal memory? What are you talking about?

I'm disappointed with no Atrac/Flac support.
Also the girl in the video looks like she has a bit too much chromosomes.

There is no doubt that almost all Sony devices, like PSP and PS3, support Atrac, but it usually only exists as an in-game decoding function.

I read somewhere Sony's not releasing the 32gb card at launch in Europe, is this still true? Because if it is that is just seriously fucked up, because bad enough they rip us off with proprietory cards but then they take advantage of early adopters making them buy one card then buy another when it's launched, and there's also rumours that accessories will be region locked so you can't just import one from Japan or US.
