ARK and PSX Games on Vita |

In case you haven't heard, there are now two major players in the Vita eCFW these days. While Total_Noob has enjoyed uncompetitive comfort for quite some time, the PRO Team's ARK has come to offer quite an interesting product. While some of the features may function better than the TN variety, PSX games in particular have users scratching their heads. As usual however, QJ has all the answers for you!
There's no denying that in some respects ARK is a better eCFW than TN. With it's faster memory stick access combined with ISO caching abilities there are plenty of indications that we're dealing with a much more finely tuned piece of software. One of the biggest additions to speak of was the ability to play PSX games on your handheld. While this sounds incredible, there was one major catch to go along with that: there will be absolutely no sound during gameplay. This obvious omission will certainly have some knit-picky gamers riled up, so for those that want to know why you can't hear those classic games I will let you in on the news.

The major reason lies in differences in hardware between the Vita and PSP. To play PSOne games, the PSP uses a secondary processor known as the media engine to take care of the task, but the problem is the Vita does not contain the chip at all. This is the reason such titles would crash if you tried them on TN. It was looking for the hardware and couldn't find it. In ARK, this problem was fixed by adding in a dummy sound emulation plugin to make the onboard PSP emulator think it had all the proper stuff to play the game. Obviously the major issue is that since this is just a dummy, no sound is actually outputted.
This can easily be fixed however as long as developers continue to work on a sound plugin that will actually make you some sound. The coder known as Coldbird had been working on something similar for TN, but having left the scene due to some strange and unwarranted leaks progress on the project was halted. You can bet that such work has probably picked up by now, but at this point those are the facts. Until then, you can enjoy some silent PSOne.
