PoV: Xbox 360 getting free-to-play titles? |
Listed in: Xbox 360 Tags: Microsoft, xbox live
I say bring it on... Microsoft!

Citing "several sources connected to the matter," Develop reports that Microsoft is looking to create new relationships with developers in an attempt to bring free-to-play gaming to Xbox 360 via Xbox Live. "This will be games that can either be monetised by in-game items or premium upgrade costs," says the report. Microsoft will incorporate a microtransactions service on Xbox Live that would allow in-game items to be bought "on the fly."
The "free-to-play" concept is fast becoming a new medium for developers and publishers nowadays. Sony has already a free-to-play game on its stable, Free Realms, while Valve recently announced a free-to-play version of Team Fortress 2. There's also Electronic Arts' free Battlefield titles, such as Battlefield Heroes and Play4Free. Steam has also stepped up the notch by adding five free-to-play games through its digital distribution service. And recently, lots of massively multiplayer online games is also heading the same route.
Personally, I think this is a good move not just for Microsoft but for all consumers, who will given an opportunity to pay for what they think a game is worth and not be forced by developers/publishers to pay drop US$ 60 on a retail game.
How about you guys? Do you think the free-to-play route will work on the xbox 360? What Xbox 360 would like to see in free-to-play format? Share your thoughts below or continue the discussion at the forums.

Microsoft has given us (Xbox) gamers great free games before, some of them had to be downloaded from the PC to the console because they were de-listed from the marketplace but other than that, great!
TF2 would be a great addition to free console games. ^_^
