PoV: Would you pay a subscription for Call of Duty online?

Call-Of-Duty-Black-Ops

Rumors floating around on Neogaf suggest that Activision is getting ready to announce a subscription based, online Call of Duty game. Would you pay a monthly fee to play CoD online?

Activision CEO Bobby Kotick has hinted at such a service in the past, expressing his desire to milk the Call of Duty franchise for all its worth. Considering the amount of people that pay $15 for new map packs, I wouldn't be surprised if a subscription based Call of Duty game was a mainstream success.

But would I pay to play it? No way.

To make it even remotely worth the money, Activision would have to make the Call of Duty game a massively online experience, similar to MAG. The problem with this is that the gameplay of the Call of Duty series suits smaller, fast paced battles. MAG is also 100% free to play, so a paid version of essentially the same game -- only with the Call of Duty brand name -- would be horrific.

What about you? Would you pay a subscription fee to play Call of Duty online? If so, what changes to the multiplayer would you want to see? Sound off in the comments section below and be sure to continue the discussion on our community forums.

No way. If I would. Hit detection would need to be fixed all DLC free and lots of it a crap load of maps and guns. And free stuff everywhere. Well paid for by the subscription. :P

That would suck for Xbox360 users, having to pay for Xbox Live, and then also more just to play fucking CoD online. what a money grab. maybe if we were ONLY on their servers, but then our Xbox Live accounts wouldnt work, and we'd have some proprietary game acount.

Xbox LIVE Gold makes sense why it needs to be paid, it's because of the servers.

Remember, server's aren't free or cheap.

You misunderstood his point. Why pay a monthly fee to Activision to play an online game on Microsoft's servers? In what world does that make sense? You'd be paying a fee to both companies to utilise one of their servers.

Really think about that.

And uhh, the only part of the last two CoD games that used XBL's servers was the matchmaking service. The actual gameplay? All P2P. So ignore my last point, because if the pattern continues...

People are going to be paying two different companies extortionate fees to play on their own, home hosted servers.

I am, of course, a believer in the free market, so if they can find enough idiots to clamber on board... then more power to them. Just know that my heart will bleed for the stupidity of our species.

Yes.
but only if they cut the price of the game, but that's never gonna happen though is it?% they'll probably charge $15 for a subscription then shortly after charge another $15 for the game, every other type of business goes by sell more and charge less but all they'll do is cry piracy as justification to charge more for their billion dollar franchise.

I think a good plot would be make a play for free CoD, but make a vip section where they could potentially bank. I won't pay a monthly fee for a game that's only half good. If they do make a monthly fee cod it'll be dead in 1.5 - 2 years.

Sounds like a good idea overall but i won't buy it.

Not a chance in f**king hell. If I wanna play something on the scale of MAG, I'll play MAG!

Greedy bastard Kotick yet again. Not content with £40 per copy of the game AND the DLC on top, he wants more.

Uh, Call of Duty is STOOPID and UNREALISTIC, you can become smart by watching The History Channel.

Uh, in your face, Kotick!

1. the game is less interesting to me than watching paint dry.
2. no, not even if they "fix" things
3. the game will probably make sales and set a standard for all games because of the CoD fankids out there whose parents probably don't care how much they spend.

No way, i moved on from the over milked Call of Duty series after Modern Warfare 2. I wouldn't ever consider buying another Call of Duty title let alone a subscription based one. I'm more than happy with my copies of MAG, and Medal of Honor. Up yours Activision.

This would be dumb just because it takes away from the casual COD players. What I mean is, I am a BF player. But, everyonce in a while I'll throw in COD and play a round or two. A subscription would take away from me even buying the game. Plus, the campaign sucked. Im not saying that BF's was that much better, but at least it was easier to follow. Thanks for reading.

Totally agree, this is just ridiculously greedy on their part, but here's the sad part --- 4/5 of you guys can completely drop any form of pay-to-play cod, and with the 1/5 that chooses to sucker up Activision will still make a killing. And they obviously know this. They don't care about numbers of players, they only care about the numbers of bills padding thier pockets...it's disgusting...

NO! i would never pay a monthly fee to play. thats why i never played wow and don't own an xbox. why pay for something when you can play something else just as good for free. call of duty games are going to be on the decline without the infity ward team, and if they start charging they are definetely doomed.

So you make me pay for the console, then I pay for the game and now you want to make me pay to play it?
F! THAT!
Thats why I don't play on Xbox Live as I refuse to pay to play.

If you give me the game for free then I'll pay till I think I've paid enough for the game but not an ongoing fee. If you want me to keep paying then you better give me free stuff all the way along.

if your going to charge a monthly fee to play online, then it should offer more than what other similar games offer for free...and it doesn't

If the main Multi-player game code is a FREE/or cheap DL (PC/PS3/360) & the Dedicated servers will let players from all Platforms FIGHT it out!lol and the monthly/yearly payment is resonable & all DLC content is inc FREE/or cheap in the subscription.....
then I may consider it!!!!

That's complete capitalism, I mean what the fuck, they'd already sell soo many copies of the game, that would be much too greedy.

FUCK NO
They sell record amounts of every installment of CoD and each copy costs 60$. The DLCs come with 3 maps from an old version of call of duty that you already paid for, and 1 new one. That costs 20$. Now they want to charge people just so they can play online? I am definetly getting Battlefield 3 now!!!
