PoV: Should Epic Games close Gears of War as a trilogy? |
Listed in: Xbox 360 Tags: Cliff Bleszinski, Epic Games, gears of war 3
Asked this very question, Cliff Bleszinski replied, "Well, there's always the Peter Jackson route, right? Do The Hobbit or something like that. I mean, we're business people. Gears 1 and 2 sold about 6 million copies, so if this game comes out and, God willing, sells 8 or 10 million it would be completely dumb to not do another one, right
It's just business 101. So, I mean, the key is figuring out what's appropriate. What makes sense for this connected world that we're moving ito? So that remains to be seen. That's the million dollar question..."

It would make sense for them to wait for what players have to say about Gears of War 3 first before deciding if they want to run the franchise for longer. It's been common practice in the industry, after all, to see how a game performs in the market first before deciding if they'll be continuing on with it.
But since it's Gears of War, I have much confidence that this will be received well by the gamers. After all, who wouldn't want to get back to the adventure with Marcus and the rest of the gang? For as long as they keep the story interesting, and the gameplay moreso, Epic Games shouldn't have a problem milking this cow for as long as they see fit.
Question is, would you prefer to close down the trilogy at this junction?

It's got a reasonable story but that's not the selling point of Gears, it's just a generally all round good FPS and keeps improving each time, if anyone's gonna kill a franchise after a trilogy it should have been Halo because after the second one it just never changes and just forget about any real entertainment value in campaign mode.

Yes greatness earned but it's always closed out. You make too many games with the same theme or storyline people will take those for granted and start to hate on them (better known as Call of Duty syndrome :P). Just if you decide to finish it completely off make sure the story ends where it began and not somewhere in between.
