PoV: Is Halo on Kinect a good idea? |
Listed in: Xbox 360 Tags: halo, kinect, Microsoft

Recent rumors suggest that there’s a new Halo title coming, and it may be exclusively for Microsoft’s Kinect. Is this a good idea, despite the Kinect lacking a controller?
The big problem with Kinect is that it lacks a controller. Due to this, the device has been flooded with mini game compilations. The library of titles for it has become so low quality that many consider Dance Central to be its killer app.
From a business standpoint, making a Kinect exclusive Halo title is a great idea. Kinect has actually sold very well, but given the popularity of the Halo series, Microsoft can make Kinect even more of a success.
It can also bring more core games to Kinect, something that it lacks. If they do it well, that is, which is the problem.
How would players move their character around? There is no input at all – the only thing I can think of would be to run in place. Aiming would work decently, but it might be hard for the Kinect camera to see a player squeezing an imaginary trigger to shoot. The only way it would really work is if it is an on-rails shooter, but who wants to play that?
If Microsoft figures out a way to make this game work, they may have found a gold mine.
What does a Halo title for Kinect need to be successful? Sound off in the comments section below and be sure to continue the discussion on our community forums.

How can you convey a first person shooter experience and explosion extravaganza is your standing up and flailing around like a clown on fire?
Kinect has its uses in other games but I honestly can't it in shooters unless they reintroduce the light guns that I had connected to my play-stations 1 & 2 to play Time Crisis 1 & 2.
If it goes to Kinect, that really is a big nail going towards the Halo coffin, not the final, far from it. But a damned big sturdy one.

Not all living room environments are the same (or are they all safe for children when in a flailing frenzy), so control could be limited depending on how much room a player has. Aiming may not be so precise, especially for "hardcore" FPS games like Halo. Those kind of games need real, physical buttons.
