Activision's recent comments about Call of Duty being like Guitar Hero in its heyday has gotten me thinking -- maybe Activision's shooter franchise should end up like Guitar Hero?

Call of Duty releases every year, and each new game seems to feel exactly the same as the last. Different campaign aside, can you honestly tell the difference between Modern Warfare 2 and Black Ops? Call of Duty has done so little to innovate the shooter genre, yet casual, mainstream gamers buy the title in masses due to the super popular brand name.

There's no doubt that Call of Duty is the most popular first person shooter out there right now, but in an industry where that genre has become so over saturated, Call of Duty is really starting to overstay its welcome.

Activision could at least go the route of EA and spend more time developing their game. Battlefield 3 looks genuinely awesome, and I can guarantee that Modern Warfare 3 will be just like Modern Warfare 2, just with different guns.

I would love for Activision to spend three or so years to work on a Call of Duty game that actually pushes the genre forward. But, knowing them, they'll continue to milk the series for all its worth... Until it dies a horrible death, just like Guitar Hero. That wouldn't be too bad, either.
