The last few months have seen an alarming rate of Internet hacks on websites and services, and despite what some pro-hacking activists may think, it will only lead to a government crackdown on the Internet.

I reported earlier today that Epic Games has been hacked, making them the third gaming company to be hacked in this month along (joining Codemasters and Nintendo UK).

We all know about the hacks on Sony that crippled their PSN service and made worldwide headlines, but it seems the attacks haven't stopped there. I still haven't managed to understand what the point in hacking Sony even was -- it made millions of PS3 and PSP users angry at the hackers.

Now, their actions can make it worse for all Internet users. Governments across the world are already starting to crack down on torrent websites, and it's only a matter of time before more legislature is passed that will blacklist and take down sites like 4chan. It can even go as far as total non-privacy on the Internet if serious hacks like these continue.

I'll ask this, and see if anyone in the comments section below or our community forums can answer it: what exactly do these hacks succeed in? What's the point of them, if only bad things can come out of it?

If you are using Firefox, couldn't you just get AdBlockPlus instead of complaining about ads?

It's funny how someone who opposes the ads so strongly still visits so regularly. If anything, you're proving to QJ that they're still in the green with the amount of ads.

Many, many, many people hate the ads, and hate the P.O.V. articles, but still come because they like the discussions of their fellow gamers. I enjoy reading the comments and I shouldn't have to try to read them while two ads are playing at the same time. (Even worse if you have multiple tabs open.)
People complained about the multiple pages and Qj fixed it.
I say that if you don't like something, then mention it, but people shouldn't be discouraged to speak up, UltimaXVIII.
Likewise, we shouldn't be forced to download something that does not help a free service that Qj.net offers.
'I'd like to support this site, but would not like to support it if we are bombarded by advertisements.' is the thinking of many people who come here.

Anyone who complains about ads on a site they DO NOT pay for is nothing but a spoiled rotten brat! As was suggested, go get a plugin.

Anyone who hates the PoV articles can simply STOP READING them. The PoV articles are a FIX for a problem people complained about (opinions in the blog articles). So if enough people complain about the PoV articles then QJ just might quit "fixing" things.

Hey QJ! I never click on the ads so...how about if I pay QJ a $20 annual subscription, you make it so paid accounts don't get ads? Food for thought!

You're dumb. We told them we didn't like the multiple pages, and they fixed it. If we don't complain, they don't know what people want.
I bet you're the kind of person that doesn't vote but gets mad whenever something you don't like happens in the government.

Grow up.

So YET AGAIN you utterly FAILED to understand.

The POV articles were created as a result from "PEOPLE VOTING" to keep the personal opinions out of the blog from the authors.

What part of that are you not capable of understanding?

You are asking to UNDO something that was done FOR US.

Gees, it's never ending with you. You just never understand what is going on around you. Utterly clueless!

"The end of Internet privacy is near."

The internet was never private. The internet is and always will be public. Anyone who thought their info was private after being posted to the internet was a fool.

Privacy agreements are between the groups stated in the agreement. Outside of that, anything is game.

is funny how a bunch of 14 years old are destroying the whole internet. They said crap like 'we're doing this for sake of people's right' when actually they're ruining their rights. Just throw groups like FBI at them, and done

By All means these are not "immature" or "stupid" people. These hackers know what their doing if they can get into companies like Sony/Nintendo etc, and judging by their attacks it's coordination to expose people's personal information by ram-sacking the security flaws in those companies whom have had those flaws for who knows how long.

Why is it being done? The real answer is unknown, some hackers do it in a form of jest to prove "Yes, I can do this" for the "fun" of it or a combination of gaining customer's personal information.

These hackers who are attacking the video-game companies sound like corrupt/"associated" gamers who have a favorite spot for Nintendo (it was mentioned in an article on this website that they like Nintendo. Also, Bethesda is FULL of bugs, and always had some sort of problem in their games, is it possible that these hackers are aiming for giant 1-million+ game corporation that's "ripe" because of the bugs on their platform?

Why haven't they touched the smaller, lesser companies? It's surprising they haven't touched Second Life, and that's chocked full of bugs that the company is slow to fix.

Will this effect how the government will regulate the internet? It is and already has(plus 1,000 other things), but what do torrents sites have to do with internet break-ins?

Thanks to the ingenious structural of the internet, this is impossible. How specifically that is so depends on the exact method governments would use to take sites down, but to over-simplify the internet is so flexible and robust there isn't a single element that couldn't be replaced by a third party.

Also, as long as there exists a neutral country, servers can just be shipped off-shore without hindrance. In fact, I'd wager that if a majority of countries do impose such bans, then you'll be damned sure some smaller or less economically developed countries will do their best to cash in on it, though I'll admit this second paragraph is mostly baseless conjecture. Still, I'd put money on it.

Well I personally think that some private hacker firm is behind this, with the attacks that we're made by those stupid kids it left a huge opportunity for someone to do all this, then blame it on them. Especially if it's an interest group who is pushing for less privacy on the internet for commercial purposes. I mean these are professional sites, do you really think the culprit would be a group of weekend nerds?

8) This sounds about right, do people think that the whole of world history happened a certain way for no particular reason whatsoever?

Things happen a certain way, and there are always a few who benefit to the detriment of all others, of course there's the party line "it's for your benefit, we did it for you! -aren't you happy that we destroyed the internet so you can be safe? no? I guess you must be one of those internet terrorists..." :-*

The internet was created in order to get one message from one side of the US to the other, even if relay points were destroyed. The internet was created specifically so that it would allow information to pass even if something blocked the message.
It won't be regulated. The only thing I see in the near future is Net Neutrality and charging for each MB you download and blocking high-bandwidth sites like YouTube.

Canada all ready charges per megabyte for wireless internet! One of the big things that made the psp go so expensive was just that, too expensive for most people to download on a wireless internet connection.

Charging per megabyte is reality now, just depends where in the world you live and what services for internet are available where you live.

You're talking about WiFi or 3G? They do that in America for 3G, but if you have an Ethernet connection, there are modems you can buy that output a WiFi signal that your computer or any device can use. The internet service providers cannot detect if you have WiFi in your house or not this way. Why don't you just do that? 8)

Hacking is similar to that of breaking and entering. If you forget to lock your house door, that doesn't mean it gives the right for someone to come in and steal shit. Hacking is no different, expect from the fact that its done virtually. Either way the hackers should be punished.

If you want to go with the door analogy, then surely once we've purchased a door and it's in our ownership we have the right to break into it all we want? Or by your reckoning does the door manufacturer still hold exclusive rights to the door and do they have the right to enter as pleased?

Personally, I think this article is a little farfetched by getting confused with websites attacks to automatically mean cracking down on the internet. I mean, these attacks are just proof of flaws in current software. Why is it necessary to assume that the government's plan it to control the internet? That makes no sense.

has nothing to do with hacking but there is an internet blacklist bill the us govt is trying to pass because of the mpaa and riaa, however if it happens, they won't stop with torrent sites.

people need to take this bill serious because its been put back through multiple times now, mpaa even has stated that the petitions were false and people didn't exist on them.
you should probably read up more on the issue because china already has had this in place for quite awhile, they even blocked various google related apps/sites.

The answer is simple. Turn the hackers over to the police. If you know who is doing this, turn them in. Because eventually even hackers will fall victim to their own crimes and then they will see the errors of their ways. I have always thought....these hackers are pretty intelligent, why don't they put their intelligence to good use and make the internet safe for everyone and keep the government from controlling it. The government has always wished for this to happen and the hackers are playing right into their hands. Hell who knows, maybe the government has secret hackers out there doing this on purpose to further thier objective....good conspiracy theory...huh?
