PoV: EA is missing the ball on racing genre, too |
Listed in: Xbox 360 Tags: Electronic Arts, need for speed, the run

Today Electronic Arts talked about all the failed innovations in the racing genre recently, but they're doing the same thing with Need for Speed: The Run.
"I think one of the issues with racing developers is that they felt that things needed to change in order for things to continue to do well, and as a result there's been a lot of quote/unquote 'innovations' in the racing space, which maybe was not necessarily the best focus," EA's Jason DeLong said earlier today.
But EA is doing the exact same thing with their upcoming racer.
There are segments in Need for Speed: The Run where players aren't in a car. Players take part in "action packed" quick time events. Last time I checked, QTEs are the exact opposite of action packed, and running around outside of a car isn't exactly racing.
Why can't racing games just be racing games? It isn't too great of a genre anyway, so there isn't a point to try and make it something that it's not. EA needs to take a page from Gran Turismo, Forza, and even Mario Kart.
