The king has made his return after 14 years, but should he stick around a while longer?

We reported earlier today that Take Two has plans to continue the Duke Nukem IP. Given the poor critical reception Duke Nukem Forever received, is this something we really want?

To answer that question, we need to consider this: we've all been blinded by nostalgia when it comes to Duke Nukem. Everyone was surprised to see that Forever would actually release, and we started to remember the good 'ole days with Duke.

Wait... what good 'ole days?

Duke Nukem has always been a single dimensional, boring character that is only somewhat interesting for the movie quotes and one liners he pipes, courtesy of voice actor Jon St. John.

Furthermore, Duke Nukem 3D, often heralded as the best game in the series, isn't all that great compared to other shooters of that era, specifically Goldeneye 007 and Quake.

All the delays that Duke Nukem Forever has seen has romanticized Duke and has made him out to be something he isn't. Decide for yourself if you want more Duke Nukem. I'm perfectly happy playing Duke Nukem 3D, pretending that Duke is a great character, so that I don't realize what it actually is if I go and play Forever.

Unless you are playing something fresh like MAG with its massive scale or Battlefield with its destruction most new shooters are just a pritty rehash of the game befor with a different location or guns. So why not rehash something that was pure and simple fun? As long as they keep Jon St. John on the pay roll I'll continure to Hail the KING!

What a crock of shit that was to read.
Duke was supposed to be single dimensional (must resist sprites joke).
And he had a hell of a lot more personality than the quake marine at the time!
I seem to remember everyone praising both games, the only thing anyone really commented much on was duke being old style engine (forget what they called it, sector based) and Quake was true 3d.

Nobody really seems to understand what duke is.
Blah... Better than that shitty Halo1-2-3 and it's teabagging fan base.
What was that? Halo was just standard run and gun too? Master Chief is a toss-pot?

Duke Nukem's character fleshed out is what made him a critical success in those days. Not the gameplay, the gameplay was criticized heavily for being a similar style to Doom.

Why are these PoVs even on this website? I thought this website was supposed to be journalistic to an extent. News is supposed to be unbiased and straightforward . The only people that should be expressing opinions are the readers. Now everytime I see a Duke Nukem article written by this author, I'll immediately know that they are very much against Duke Nukem and shouldn't even bother reading the article. I'm sorry to the writer of this article, but if you want to express your opinion, open up a blog. I like to come on here for straight reporting on gaming news.
