PoV: Digital-only distribution will never be the standard

There's one simple reason that makes a digital distribution-only future unlikely.

Gamers love being able to assemble a gaming collection. You can't do that with download only games.

Sure, you can sit there and marvel at all the games in your Steam games list. But it's nothing compared to being able to look at your gaming shelf filled with games.

That, to me, is the only thing holding back digital distribution.

I'm a game collector. I have tons of NES, SNES, and N64 games. My collection wouldn't be that impressive -- and I wouldn't be as happy with it -- if it was all download. I have plenty of games downloaded on my Wii and PS3, but it just isn't as rewarding as having the real thing right there.

It's like this:
1.Internet use to download games

2.People don't bother buying games with their credit cards for long periods of time. 1 a month, maybe 1 every two months at current price.

3.Walk into the electronics section and theres nothing but 3 different consoles for sale that takes up 1 shelve. (It would kill it all together.) Plus when you walk down the game section you browse more games then you would regularly see online. Many indie games would vanish because all the big games get ad priority. Kind of a swap-a-roo of the current online market state. But indie would have no where to go.

anyways :-x

No one cares about us anymore (the collector). As collectors, like I, become old and die out, new formats will take over. I hear all the time, people coming into my work and saying how they prefer tape over dvd because it holds data much longer .... even despite the fact of the quality degrading over the course of its use, these people still rely on tape. And they are all over 50!

Look at how fast the Ipod/mp3 made cd's obsolete. All bias aside, there is NOTHING holding back an all digital future. I wouldn't be surprised if in the next xbox/ps console the downloads will be the focus, and the disc drive will be there (or as an add-on) for backwards compatibility. Once the NEXT next gen console come out? All the B.C. will be downloadable.

Those in areas without internet, you will take some sort of proprietary memory card into a gamestop, purchase and then download it to your card, take it home and pop it in your PS 5/Xbox 1080... and there you have it.

Shame it just isn't true. People said the same of music, now most kids haven't even seen a CD before, much less owned one. For us older folks? Probably holds true. I have a pretty sizeable collection of games dating back to the Atari. My PC game collection though? All digital. Always will be, too. So who knows.

I can only hope for that to continue being the case.

Actually, I think it has nothing to do with collection, but rather:

1. Physical media sizes always outpace home internet connections.

2. ISPs keep imposing data caps.

3. You can't sell it, buy it used, trade it, borrow it, lend it, etc.

THAT is what will prevent a DD-only future.

Also...

4. No need to worry about taking up space on your console.

5. You can find discounted versions of the game on clearance....

6. You add jobs to the market with the transportation, packaging, etc.

7. You OWN it instead of the license....

I don't know I personally condensed my game collection (NES,SNES,N64,G B,GBC,GBA,Gamec ube,Genesis, Dreamcast I wish I hadn't gotten rid of this, and others) down to a 2 terabyte external harddrive. I miss having all that paraphernalia but at the least I can still play it all.

Digital-only is meant for xbl an ps store, now like many people how can i trade or sale a digital only game. besides that lets say if mainly u can only play while ur online only. imagine if it was like that an that console servers went down an or ur net how would u play.

when the ps3 went down if it wasnt for netflix an my collections of games my ps3 would have been worthless..not saying gaming is my life. on average people play all kinds of games to relax from a hard day or ahard day from work to relive stress etc etc. the list 2 long 2 keep goin.

with that said digital only games should only be a option threw a iphone an consoles nothing more nothing less.

Totally agree with you!

I am one of those who prefer to have the hard copy of the games I own...
What really annoys me is these digital downloads holding the same price as the hard copy (or even higher in some cases). I really don't understand how they can charge so much for something that hasn't needed to be shipped/cased, have no instructions etc etc... It takes the piss!

People nowadays buy digital music, digital tv, digital games (steam, xbl, psn).

Everything in the future is going to be digital-only, regardless if you/I hate it.

As long as it sells it's what matters to them.

Unfortunately, your logic is flawed....
"As long as it sells it's what matters to them."
People are gonna keep buying physical copies of games regardless, therefore, they are gonna continue to sell them.

yea i do understand that but digital only holds no value for us companies yea. with that said a virus is the 1# thing that can erase everything or a corrupt file. an like my man said 2011-08-03 03:49 how are we paying the same price as a hard copy SMH. hard copy games we pay 4 its logo's the manual advertisements on the disc an in the game an the disc itself. we are sheep we'll follow anything an accept why.

off the subject people are trying 2 get socom 2 hd on the ps3 its over 10,000 people voting 4it ok an thats important lol but its not life why dont people use the same energy for real life things laws thats hurting us, companies uses us milk'n us etc. people are making small matters bigger an big issues. small jus say'n all of this can be stopped if we stand up together if not we dont matter we'll stay as sheep

True I like hearing songs on youtube but it is nothing compared to my shelf full of albums. Same with games although i have games downloaded on the ps3 i always forget to count them with the ones i bought. And the thing which really keeps me away from them is the fact that it takes hours to download and install a game and once the hard disc it full you either have to delete some games or buy a new console or a new hard disc
