PoV: CoD-style development is bad for the industry |
Listed in: Xbox 360 Tags: Activision, battlefield, call of duty, EA, milking franchises

We've seen two mentions of Call of Duty style development cycles today from the same developer, but only one account was the right one.
EA's Jason DeLong said today that a Call of Duty style development cycle has helped out the Need for Speed genre.
Has it really?
We're now getting yearly releases of Need for Speed, and each one has been pretty low in quality. I haven't played a worthwhile NFS game since Most Wanted.
DICE's Patrick Bach was right on the money when he said that yearly releases for Battlefield would kill the franchise.
Yearly releases bog down a genre so much that gamers expect something to be generic. It's happened with Call of Duty to the point that gamers don't even realize that they're playing essentially the same game that released last year. The few that do realize this are, unfortunately, in the minority.
If every franchise in gaming had a new addition each year, would you continue to play video games? Sound off in the comments section below and be sure to continue the discussion on our community forums.

some games can become successful doing this but I also get tired of these kind of games.
just look at THQ's UFC Undisputed from the 2009 and the 2010 edition, it looked and played pretty much the same, that's why they prolonged its time for dev't so i'm expecting a new UFC title on 2012 or 2013.
while THQ's SvR series has been just pretty much the same gameplay, the graphics didn't even improved (maybe a slight improvement).
one of the good things for games having a 2-4-or more years of dev't is that it will have new unique features and we won't easily get tired of playing it.
good thing that the GTA franchise is one of those games that still is awesome.
