PoV: Blood and gore isn't mature |
Listed in: Xbox 360 Tags: bulletstorm, Duke Nukem, ESRB, majoras mask

Despite the ESRB giving a game the "M" rating for having tons of blood and gore, that game isn't mature.
In today's era of gaming, many mainstream websites such as IGN and GameSpot define terms like "hardcore gamers," "casual gamers," and "mature." As of late, "hardcore" and "mature" have fallen under games with tons of blood and gore. While the first part -- hardcore versus casual -- is certainly an issue that needs to be cleared up, I'll dedicate this space of the Internet to what makes a game truly mature and what doesn't.
I'm not arguing that games with blood, gore, strong language, sexual themes, and drug use shouldn't be rated M, since that gives parents a great indication of what the game contains.
I'm talking about the themes of a game. A game like Bulletstorm or Duke Nukem Forever doesn't take itself seriously, and as such it isn't mature -- it's like that 13 year old kid that swears because he thinks it makes him tough.
Oftentimes the real mature games have a family friendly rating by the ESRB, because the rating board doesn't dig into the deeper meaning of the title (nor should it). The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask is riddled with dark and emotionally gripping themes despite having an E rating. Heavy Rain is another excellent example of a game that has mature themes without the unnecessary additions of blood, gore, and drug use.
What makes a game mature? Is it the blood and gore or the deeper meaning of the title? Sound off in the comments below, and be sure to continue the discussion on our community forums.

My point is, Carls a freakin retard. bloOd guts killing languange IS ALL MATURE!!! to say that it is not is freakin, well, retarded.
binladens death photo is a prime example. they dont release it because its toO graphic. MATURE graphic. the story is released. no big deal. people translate stories however their minds do so. IMAGES on the other hand are powerful in their imagery.
Carl is stupid for writing this article. its obvious.
and saying someone has no life outside of gaming is the equivilant to correcteing this sentense for its four misteaks to prove grammar nazis trump all arguments.
and finally, in real life I am superior to you in EVERY way and could literally take your life with my hands.

Hope you can back up your words in real life. Easy to say on the net, not so much in reality.

I think Duke Nukem looks retarded, like a game a 12 year old plays to try to be cool.

I wish games were like OOT and MM... If I get cancer I want make a wish foundation to get the original team together and work on a new project.

Parents would think there was something wrong with me playing Mortal Combat on the n64.
Changing the color to green won't make a difference either.
In anime they change it to black.... no idea how bloond is mature.

Ganondorf cough up green blood in later versions of OoT. Never understood why to this day...
Anyway, I share today's article PoV about blood & gore doesn't mean it's mature. If anything, I think a number of games over exaggerate blood & gore.

And yes, when I was young(er), it was always Zelda that seemed much darker to me than, say, Mortal Kombat or Turok. It's impossible not to laugh at Liu Kang's voice when he does a bicycle kick in MK4.
Time to hook up my N64 again. Good day.
