PoV: BioWare needs more diversity |
Listed in: Xbox 360 Tags: BioWare, dragon age, manveer heir, mass effect

BioWare's Manveer Heir said earlier today that there isn't enough diversity in today's game industry. Ironically, BioWare is just as guilty as most other developers.
I'm not arguing the quality of BioWare's games, but everything they make is essentially the same thing with different characters and a different setting. The storylines in Dragon Age and Mass Effect are way too similar for it to be a coincidence.
Not to mention that the gameplay mechanics in each of their games are crazily alike. Like Bethesda, all of their RPGs run on same or similar engines with similar gameplay mechanics. The only titles they've made that are significantly different are Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood and their upcoming Star Wars MMORPG.
"I've played certain characters over and over in video games. Every time I save the world, it gets less interesting. It doesn't matter what the journey was to get there," Heir had said. "Ultimately, I know what's going to happen. I know I'm going to save the world at the end, and I'm going to play the same like archetypical character to get there, because mythology says there are certain archetypes — the savior."
The above quote is ironic, especially when you look at the Commander Sheppard character as the prototypical, generic savior.

I understand that Bioware games have an inherent familiarity with them and that is because it is it's staple.
The conversation system, third person gameplay, editable main characters, etc.
(Don't forget Knights of the Old Republic)
But as far as Dragon Age and Mass Effect containing the same story in a different setting is complete bullshit.
So you're telling me that a super sentient machine race is trying to kill off humanity in Dragon Age?

What, you mean the character that can turn evil at the player's whim?
Punch reporters, kill in cold blood, yada, yada.
There are holes in your POV articles, why don't you try playing the games before writing a canned article about them.
