Gotham City Impostors - Initial Impressions |
Listed in: Xbox 360 Tags: gotham city impostors, monolith, warner bros
When I got my code for the Gotham City Impostors beta, I honestly only gave it a try to say that I did. I went in with no expectations whatsoever. Since it's a multiplayer-only FPS, I assumed it would be full of cheaters of every stripe, lag, and people that are just way, way better at FPSs than me. And it was. But it was so much god damn fun that I didn't care about my crappy K/D ratio.
When the beta ended, I couldn't wait until the full game came out and quickly snapped it up and downloaded it. Yes, those early levels kinda suck, as you can't custom build and have to rely on stock weapons. I've already run into guys that are ranked well into the 40s, despite the game only being out for one day, and needless to say they have all the good stuff. That being said, you'll rank up fairly quick and by the time you're in the 20s you'll have most of what you'll want depending on your build and playstyle.
The game types are fairly typical; there's Team Deathmatch, a capture the flag variant called Psych Warfare, and a control point mode called Fumigation. There's also a Challenge Mode, which I honestly haven't touched yet but it involves trying accomplish various time trials on your own to earn medals.
I prefer having objectives besides "kill everyone!" because it provides a little more structure, but that's just me. All the modes are a blast. Currently, there are only a handful of maps but the devs say more are coming in March and they'll be free. All the maps are pretty dynamic and the various gadgets make it even more so.
Some problems I've run into are apparent hack/lag problems and the fact that certain builds can easily dominate most games. Last night I ran into a guy shooting people through multiple walls from across the map, which as far as I know is not some ability unlock. Two guys on the other team literally went 25-2.
As far as the builds go, the "Mighty" body type up-armored to hell and back is pretty unstoppable. That being said, it's the type I currently enjoy, but I'll be branching out for more challenges. As to those challenges, there are challenges for every weapon, body type, gadget...well, pretty much everything. And they all earn you little unlockable doodads. I love having these goals in mind while killing the shit outta fools.
All in all, if you like humor and overall chaos in your FPSs and you liked the Team Fortress games like I did I think Gotham City Impostors is easily worth a measly $15.
Good job Monolith and Warner Bros!
Check out the gameplay video below. No, it's not me.
