Remember these?

There was a time long ago, in a far off year called 2008, where music games were the cool thing. I know it may seem weird, but having plastic instruments and your buddies over was like the weekend thing to do. Set some cold ones away and play till your bones were brittle. It was a great time and then it all started to crash a year later.

More and more bands started to show up in town to steal the spotlight. DJ's and bands from yesteryear crowded the schedule and no one knew what to do. They just kept playing and then online the music media broke out with more and more "packs" turning up on PSN and XBLA. People could play whatever they wanted even if it was a remix of Rhianna and David Guetta.

Then by the time 2011 rolled around the band had packed up and moved onto another town and no one knew what to do with themselves. It wasn't just one band either; it was the promoters, it was the distributors, it was the fans too, who had put their guitars away and decided to call it a day.

So in the span of two years, what happened?

A lot of people saw a shift in the market away from music games as early as the end of 2009. This was some time after the release of the phenomenal Rock Band Beatles and the less-than-popular DJ Hero. There was a sequel in 2010 for DJ Hero which was released to very little acclaim and success. But it wasn't just lacklustre sales that left the music industry in the dust. Far more interesting and slightly less complicated reasons formed from the musical wastelands than just rushed games with new coats of paint. Something much more interesting indeed...okay, well interesting is subjective, you could really just find it a bore and barely get past the next paragraph, but just level with me, if you like talking about games, it'll be interesting.

From my understanding, these games just weren't profitable. The cost of manufacturing the plastic crap was too high.

See Harmonix vs. Viacom.

They were fun, I gotta admit that.

They just overdid and made too many sequels, which all seem pretty pointless. Why not release one good game packed with a lot of features and have the rest of the stuff DLC?

Nooo, instead they tried to milk us all by releasing new titles of the same crap.

Like dance mats & Eyetoys before it it's a just a fad that inevitably dies out, and the next to go is obviously Kinect within 2 years unless they can actually do something decent with it like combining it with a motion controller.

Er, DJ Hero 2 was one of the highest-rated games of 2010, so I'm not sure where the whole "little acclaim" part is coming from.

Also, no Rocksmith? Kind of sad. You should go out and try it if you can- it's a new milestone in the rock simulation genre.

Thirdly, GH2 was the first released title under Activision (but only on Xbox 360). Also, Hrmonix developed Rock the 80s, not Neversoft.

Nitpicking, maybe, but it's my favorite genre and I love to see it fairly represented.

GH2 was the first 360 title on the 360.
I really wish I could have had more time to write about Rocksmith. I think that they are the next-gen but sadly they don't get the same air-time/hype as the previous games. Good eye though.
Not nitpicking, all fairly true. Thanks S :)

I play a more challenging version of Guitar Hero/Rock Band, it's called reading sheet music or tablature while staying in tempo...

What, no origins of plastic instruments? Sad not to see a mention of Guitarfreaks.

The original draft went into the whole history of plastic games, going all the way back to Mario Paint having that musical thing and Nintendo's Piano instrument. But I should have at least acknowledged Guitar Freaks.
