PoV: What can we expect for Wii U's online functionality? |
Listed in: Wii Tags: mario, Nintendo, online, Satoru Iwata, Zelda

Nintendo said earlier today that they aren't going to be the #1 company in terms of online. Looking at the 3DS and what third parties have said, what can we expect for Wii U's online system?
Judging from what Satoru Iwata has said in the past, I'm sure Nintendo won't have a singular online system for Wii U. They'll let third parties do whatever they want -- this means EA can add their own online system, and Valve can use Steamworks.
It's already been confirmed that there will be no friend codes, so that's a major step up already. There will surely be a friends list similar to the Nintendo 3DS (only without friend codes this time) and possible even video chat via the front facing camera on the Wii U's controller.
But like the current generation, don't expect a ton of Nintendo games to make use of online. Third parties are likely to use it to their fullest abilities, but a game like Mario or Zelda on Wii U will not have any online mode. On the bright side, though, Smash Bros for Wii U will likely have a fantastic online component, unlike the one seen in Brawl.
What do you hope from Nintendo for Wii U's online capabilities? Sound off in the comments section below and be sure to continue the discussion on our community forums.

There has to be a friends list of some sort. How are you suppose to know who your friends are and how do you video chat with them if there is no friends list?
The friends code is good but there needs to be a way to find your friends.
They have already said there is no multimedia functions so its already crippled and now they say there is no multiplayer?
Do they want a better console than the Wii? It doesn't look like it.
