Despite its strong sales, the Nintendo Wii has always been considered by some as a casual gaming console compared to the PS3 and Xbox 360. A notion that Nintendo wants to change with the upcoming arrival of the Wii U.

“This is something that has been pointed out by developers outside of the company," Iwata said in the latest edition of Iwata Asks. "Including HD support, there had been times up to now where you could do things on other companies' hardware, but was difficult to do on Wii,“ he said. “With Wii U, I also wanted to alleviate those restrictions as much as possible.”

Miyamoto then admitted that the lack of HD on the Wii could have played a major role why the console was abandoned by the core audience.

“One of the key reasons that such things as the core and the casual exist today is that we decided not to adopt HD on the Wii console. Of course, besides that there are things like issues with the controller and the challenges that it brings, network functionalities and many other things, but I think HD was the biggest factor that everyone was able to clearly understand the difference,” he said.

It could have been one of the factors, but personally, I think the biggest flaws of the Wii is not the hardware itself, but the way Nintendo marketed the console. Not to mention the truckloads of shovelwares they've re-released every month. Nintendo is confident that their upcoming console can bridge the gap between the core and the casual audience, but is it too little to late? High Definition really? Come on Iwata-san and Miyamoto-San that wasn't even the big issue the core audience had. It was lack of Nintendo's Seal of Quality Assurance on every game. You licensed the dev kit out to everyone and their mama period and didn't care whether they built a quality game or not. To top it all off you dropped a whole lot of really good IP you had and never allowed it to see the light of day.

Look douche bag I'm not looking at how it is now. I'm looking at how it could have/ should have been. Do you honestly fucking believe that HD would have saved that console (at least in the core gamers opinion)? No it wouldn't have Nintendo's old marketing strategy ( Build some quality entertainment products and be careful with who we license too) compared to their new marketing strategy ( Let's allow every developer and their mother to get their hands on this Dev Kit and make a joke of a game while we keep the majority of our IP locked in a cage deep in the Lava of Death Mountain and not care)is just what has really hurt them. And you dude your comparing a Master System to the Wii? Dude you were probably one of those dudes who got his hands on an NES more than you ever touched a Master System. I'm not upholding what Nintendo did to their fans on this latest generation of consoles in fact I agree whole-heartedly with just about every remark that is on this page, but I do feel that straight hateration isn't gonna change anything your just gonna make this once beloved Hardware and Software manufacturer turn a blind eye on everything that built them up to who they are. Nintendo was never just about Mario and Zelda. Nintendo was about giving people what they wanted (at least as far as is within reason). A decent game playing experience.

The problem isn't so much lack of HD and over-saturation of games, the biggest problem is the controller is basically an unwieldy rectangular stick with buttons, and even if Nintendo wanted you just can't make decent games with that, and you can't make AAA titles for the classic controller for the same reason there's only a handful of lightgun games ever made, because there's only a small market when you have to go out and buy a separate controller, and even though the Wii U controller also looks unwieldy at least it has all the buttons and knobs you need to play any game.

thus showing the wii was only popular because it caught the attention of the females, many of who never really played any games before.

actually i think it caught the attention of kids more than females. the wii is more of a child's toy than a gaming console.

LoL beside HD there are
Awful controll
Crapy hardware
Lack of game variety
To many same old stuff
To expensive games.

How about games that made you want to play for more than 5 mins? (if you only own a wii, your opinion on my post is worthless)

I own all three, I only had a very limited number of games that gave me that kind of satisfaction The two Mario Galaxy games (yeah NSMB Wii felt generic) NPC Donkey Kong Jungle Beat was pretty awesome and the motion controls actually seemed to work more for that than anything else amongst a few others.

The problems with Wii:
1. There aren't sufficient quality games.
2. Weird controller unsuitable for regular games.
3. Wii's in SD not HD.

Honestly, the Wii had less stuff than other consoles, thus who would want it. The instinct of every animal is always to get the best and nothing lower, look at Walmart they don't say "Get second rate stuff for less"
Honestly If every game hadn't tried to integrate the wiimote into the game, then medium/core gamers would play using the gamecube controller (good design, but always felt cheap).

The instinct of every animal is by far Not to get the best and nothing lower, a big percentage is more interested in image (Apple), some just want the latest and cheapest(Xbox), and some want simplicity(Wii) , and if the next fad comes along it will again crush the competition no matter how bad it is.

The 'Biggest Factor' for me is the lack of total experience. Sure i tell my girlfriend that the reason we won't turn on the Wii is it looks like crap on my HDTV compared to the PS3 but also. Netflix, DVDs (playback only available though homebrew) and games all look like poo. Microsoft and Sony had it right by making their systems the center of the entertainment.
