PoV: HD isn't the big upgrade Project Cafe needs

Project-Cafe-Leaked-Image-1

A supposedly leaked image of Nintendo's Project Cafe.

Project Cafe, the rumored code name of Nintendo's new home console that's currently in development, has already been confirmed to have HD output. That isn't the big graphical upgrade it needs over Wii, though.

" [...] To us it is of course a logical step to doing something with HD. The number of households with a 3D television is now big enough to make an HD game console. And of course we are always busy anyway with the development of new consoles. We focus not only on HD and the next game will features something totally different than usual," Shigeru Miyamoto said in an interview today.

The console is rumored to output in full 1080p HD (something very few, if any, PS3 and Xbox 360 games do), but honestly, HD isn't very important.

I play all my PS3 games in SD -- an HDTV that's smaller than my SDTV is still too expensive for me -- and Uncharted 2 still looks amazing. A new Nintendo console that's basically an HD enabled Wii wouldn't allow it to run The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. What the Wii lacks is power, and that's what Project Cafe needs.

Luckily, it's been rumored that the console will be significantly more powerful than the PS3. Nintendo's investor's meeting is this Monday, April 25, so hopefully we get some concrete information there.

What's more important, HD or processing power? Sound off in the comments below, and be sure to continue the discussion on our community forums.

HD isn't really big for me. What I think the Wii 2 needs is some form of achievements/trophies system. It is my carrot.

The only game that I felt compelled to fully complete was Super Mario Galaxy.

When the PS4 comes out it will be stronger than the Nintendo console.

Nintendo is always one step behind, but when it comes to sales, they get them.

Hurr durr, of course it will be. The PS4 won't come out for at least another five years +. If Nintendo released a more powerful console than their current competitors in the next year or so, they would definitely be one stead AHEAD.

What's all this "always" one step behind, anyway? The Wii might have been a step below the 360 and PS3, but the Gamecube was more powerful than the PS2, and the N64 was the most powerful console on the market until the Dreamcast launched.

Naw you got it wrong.

The only time it was on the lead was the N64 then dreamcast beat it by performance. PS1 came out and beat it as well. Then they made PS2 to beat dreamcast. The gamecube was out for a while but the xbox was in the lead. Then Wii & 360 then PS3.

Now it will be Project Cafe getting beaten by both PS4 and 720.

They even beaten by the portables by sony.

That's what I mean by them being step behind. They should wait.

Really dude? Who cares the games will still be fun. As far as Processing power/hd go I prefer the third option: a wide array of games to choose from (including first and third party that are not IMO shovel ware.)

n64 was definately the most powerful of its generation since everyone else was doing 32 bit consoles like ps1/xbox, i dont think ps2 was made to "beat" dreamcast since again, dreamcast was the more powerful more capable console.
xbox had a 733mhz processor, gamecube was 485mhz, so it was never more powerful, wasnt more powerful than ps2 either. it was the weakest of its generation in terms of processing power , the same as the wii is today.

Nintendo made the industry what it is, but since the N64 had its heyday nintendo has consistently built the weakest consoles, whether they be home or portable. EVERYONE builds a more powerful product than nintendo. nintendo just markets better.

Nintendo's processing power and graphics may be one step behind, but they're ideas in this last gen have led the pack. It took Sony and Microsoft several years to follow Nintendo into the motion-control arena.

Carl B, you play PS3 games on an SDTV? This just shows you're not very bright.

Nintendo does need to get with the times and have better graphics / HD resolution for its console.

We're in 2011, I don't expect Nintendo to release anything much better than a PS3 or an Xbox 360, but Wii is almost the same as a PS2 hardware.

"Carl B, you play PS3 games on an SDTV? This just shows you're not very bright."

it has nothing to do with being bright - some of us don't care, or don't notice, the difference between SD and HD. i don't wear my glasses when i game, so i wouldn't see any difference between SD and HD.

i used to play FF12 at work on my breaks on a 25 year old tv wired thru a 15 year old vcr. it's the game play that matters, not the graphics.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~
on a separate note, nintendo could just release the wii as it is under the Project Cafe name and it would be instantly better
HDTV's are what's used now, not CRT TV's so therefore Nintendo MUST release their console with HD output/graphics.
It's obvious they will, it wouldn't make any sense for them to still use hardware as outdated as PS2's.
If you don't care about the graphics just go play NES or Atari 2600, shut the fuck up with "graphics don't care, gameplay doesn't".
It's obvious also gameplay matters but so does graphics now.
no, it's not as important as you think.
i've seen my share of absolutely beautiful games that last for 5 hours, and i've played games with crappy graphics for hours on end.
if the controls weren't so bad on the old systems, i would gladly break out my colecovision and start it up.
trust me, running your game thru a CRT or an HD set - after that initial adjustment occurs, you would quickly forget the difference once you start playing a good game.
"no, it's not as important as you think."
Sorry bud, you are dead wrong here. CRTs are no longer sold. Widescreen TV's and monitors are now the standard.
A minimum of 720 is MUCH MORE important then you think.
SD is dead. HD is the new standard. The same goes for broadcasting.
ha u still play on SD and the small ones are too expensive u can get a 50" for like 600 bux man save a lil be respnsible. Uncharted is amaznig and looks that but better in HD .. Ninetendo needs not to seel itself short. Go back to the things that made u the main system.. remember when all the parents used to say all kids do is play thier nintendo even tho there where other options Nintendo was the main event. Get better games and stick to big titles we know and love and ease up on all the useless kid games....gta 4...killzone3...halo...and u wonder y u r failing
If the guy doesn't care about HD, then he doesn't care! You morons don't get to tell him he's 'failing' cos he's not a tech geek spending mommy and daddy's money on big tv's to compensate for never having known the touch of a woman. He proves the article to be spot on. What would you rather have? The innovation of a Nintendo console along with all the AAA multi-platform IPs or an HD version of Monopoly and carnival games: ring toss 3: the revenge.
lol people dont understand much do they the most important thing to any buisness is profit, if they can make a bigger profit selling kids lets face it kids are probably one of the biggest gaming groups beating all the hardcore gamers on shere number and least ammount of development in games, if i owned a games company i would probably stick to shovelware with popular childrens branding slapped on it and rake in the cash like nintendo is doing, lets face it kids arnt going to cry that if you switch weapon "x" to weapon "y" the game somtimes crashes, and the parents would probs just assume the children messed up, so ppl crying that nintendo arnt catering to hardcore games, think about it why do you think they care, and if your soooooo happy with your 360 and ps3 why does it matter too you
Did you miss EyeToy on the PS2 then? True it may not have been quite up to par with Kinect and it had no motion based controllers, but technically Sony got there first (not counting the many PC webcam games that came out way before!)
And as for HD vs Power. I think both are just as important now, especially more so now we're seeing HDTVs drop in price and become very affordable.
A wealth of games would also be nice. I know the Wii has a lot of games, but most of them are just shovelware and I really don't know why anyone would play half of them. I've tried a few and they're good fun. For all of 5 minutes.
Very true. LCD/LED TVs today are about the same as tubes cost way back when. In the tube days you could around a grand on a 47" tube. Now you can buy a 47" for $1,000 and cheaper.
The last 32" Sony tube I bought was around $300. Now you can buy a 32" for the same amount.
The only people complaining about it are ignorant people that can't connect the dots.
I just saw an ad this morning for a 47" LED/LCD screen for $900 on Newegg.
Damn they're getting cheap!!!
UGH! The same tired old comment. I'm still on SD and it's good enough for me!
Well, good for you! Are you also still listening to 8 track? SD is dead. CRT is no longer sold. Widescreen/HD format is the new standard. DEAL WITH IT! If your crap TV died today, then what? Are you going to scout garage sales for a new tube?
Anyone who thinks SD is just as good as HD:
1. Has never seen HD.
2. Is lying to save face with their mirror every morning.
3. Is blind!
4. Is looking at HD on a 12" screen.
Whether you care about HD or not, the new minimum standard is 720. It's about time! Now the entire world is finally viewing the same damn resolution.
Anyone who doesn't like it can go cry at the FCC.
