Nintendo's new console was designed to bridge the gap between the casual and the hardcore audience, the specific market that has slowly drifted away from the platform.

Now the Big N wants to make up for the lost time and lure the crowd back by announcing several "hardcore" franchises and games coming to it's Wii U console. The question now is... can Nintendo finally cater to its long lost audience?

“Wii U redefines the structure of home entertainment by fundamentally changing how the TV, the game console and the Internet function and interact together,” said Nintendo President Satoru Iwata during the consoles unveiling at E3 last week. “The experience enabled by Wii U and the new controller takes players deeper into their games, while reaching out wider than ever before to be inviting to all kinds of gamers.”

While I'm very impressed on how the Wii U was built and being marketed upon, I'm still not to sure if it can cater to the hardcore crowd, given, most of the audience they are targeting already own a PS3, Xbox 360 and desktop PC.

“Will U will be equally satisfying to all? No machine has done that before,” Mr. Iwata said. “It will offer deeper and wider experiences than any gamer has realized before. It will let everyone see games in a different way.” The question now, can it deliver the goods?

I have every faith that the new differenty controller, singular though it may be, will finally rejoin these long estranged factions.

Its just what "hardcore/casual" gamers have been clamoring for.

are you being sarcastic? the thought of attempting to playing a competitive FPS like COW or a Fighting game like Mortal Kombat on this pad makes me cringe. God help me if my excessive button mashing damages the pad, then i'd have to settle with trying to fight using the wiimote( take a moment to actually ponder this).

And to think, i thought the original xbox pad was bad.

i for one am not impressed with this. Yet another gimmick created by Nintendo to attract suckers.

There is little incentive to pick a multiplatform on this over the others. its a good thing

wow, now i can see my map and inventory on the pad without having to pause! GAME CHANGER. No offense but if thats the "game changer" i have to look forward to then i'll pass.

i have my own TV, as do most gamers, and so have no reason to "continue my gaming on the pad while my grandma watches All MY Children"

I've since gotten over my obsession with Nintendo first party games, last mario console game i played was mario 64, and thus goes any incentive for me to obtain one.

the only real reason that a gamer will me enticed by this is the allure of new technology. But i guarantee of the few chumps that actually get this, they'll realize quickly that they've been fooled by the BIG N yet again.

nope. too much mental damage from the last console. The name "nintendo" itself is just going to scare off the hardcore audience from even giving it a chance. Unless they make their launch titles and wii sports games Teen+ and their focus on 3rd party games First person shootesr (like Modern Warfare 3 battle field)Ninja Gaiden Tekken Streeet Fighter, Final Fantasy. or do something like try to snatch up most of the PC's exclusive MMORPG's on the console, then nothing will lure them in at this point. It'll be like the Leapfrog or Leapster for older children as far as games are concerned if they don't make their focus for hardcore and just mention its backwards compatible if the casual fans miss their wii type games.

nintendo needs to stick to the old adage "stick to what you know" and keep catering to the family/younger audience/casual gamer.

yeah, they put out a few games that hardcore gamers will like, like zelda, but for the most part the line has been drawn based on the wii.

"Can Wii U bring in the hardcore crowd?"

Who cares? Bring on the good games!

If the "hard core" crowd actually mattered then then the BILLION dollar industry that is casual and most handheld games wouldn't exist.

The specs of the Wii U are good enough to bring any current game to it, if that's what you mean.

People should wait until they have more tangible evidence of anything instead of immediately applying the persona of the Wii on the Wii U.

My answer to the POV is yes and no.
If by hardcore you mean the people who play games for the sake of playing games and just want a good time, then yes. The truth of the matter is that its not really that black and white but a whole spectrum of grays.
I know that I have found an enjoyable experience on every console I played from any developer and this will be no differenct

Obviously there'll be some proper pads like 360 & Ps3's announced soon because Nintendo already said only 1 of these tablet pads work per console, and it works on Bluetooth so there'll be any amount of 3rd party controllers made for it, so i reckon like the Wii brought non gamers onto consoles this could turn casual gamers onto the more hardcore games and still keep the traditional Nintendo fanbase and probably steal back some of the casuals who went to Kinect & Move.
