What Do You Think: Consoles to Be Eclipsed By Tablets? |

According to the CEO of the Crisis series developer, the slow launch of new hardware is being a detrimental force to the industry. In a recent interview cited by Gamespot, he states that because the current consoles have been on the store shelves for so long, people are starting to forget that consoles are the first machine that people should be using to play games. With the rise of popular tablets such as Apple's iPad and Google's Nexus Tab, there certainly does seem to be a slight trend in moving away from consoles for games. With Angry Birds alone passing the one billion download mark across platforms, can we truly say that there is a shift to this platform, and is the slow release of consoles really to blame for it?

For me at least, that answer is no. Yes people have been using tablets more, but the console race has very little to do with that. What has made tablets so successful are two things that most consoles don't have: accessibility and portability. Thanks to the simple but intuitive use of the touch screen interface, games have simply been able to reach a wider audience on tablets. There are no complex buttons, to memorize as long as you can see the screen, making the games a lot easier to learn. Not to mention tablets can be brought out of the home as well. Good luck bringing your PS3 Phat on the train for a game of Uncharted. Essentially, I think what Yeri's saying is true, but not for the reasons he states. The evolution of gamers moving towards the tablet is going to be a threat from here on out. The console industry is just going to have to learn to cope with that.
What do you think gamers? Am I just blowing smoke or will console's face trouble against a tablet no matter when they release? Share your thoughts in the comments below!

Tablets are growing with tablet games like angry birds - something that has basically one control option - pull bird back with finger and release. Unless tablets start coming with controllers, they will never take over the console space. There is something to be said for the tactile sensation of feeling real buttons under your fingertips and not circles drawn on a touchscreen to control your character.

I sure could. It works fine. Dead Space was pretty cool on my iPad.

1. Based on what? The fact that all three consoles are older then dirt and sales are flooded?
2. Says who? Why the hell should I think of a stationary unit as the first machine to play games? You? Who the hell are you?
Consoles are the LAST device I think of to play a game. PC first, then mobile then the living room.
