The Q*Bert world record is 33 million. It apparently takes 70 hours to achieve, of continuous gameplay. George Leutz decided to try and top that. Genius.
In all fairness, this isn't his first attempt to beat the world record, which was set in 1983 by Rob Gerhardt. His first attempt was in April, and that attempt was interrupted by someone kicking a power cable and resetting all the arcade machines in the arcade, after 30 hours of work.

Personally I would have lost it and probably unleashed some gamer rage on the kid who messed up the game; but instead George went for a second try the following month, and the second attempt ended after 54 hours of fatigue. In the words of Crocodile Dundee, ‘crikey’!.
This third attempt ended at 57 hours and 40 minutes, with a final score of 26,721,915. The world record is 33,273,520, so I can’t imagine the frustration he must have felt.
Losing my Pokémon Yellow save file of 50 hours made me come to tears. This guy must have been at least 7 hours angrier than me.
What do you think of feats like these? Do you think they’re impressive or pointless?

He's no where NEAR the record, why is he even trying?

You don't know until you try it...

I would say 80.31% is "close".
But like Azariel said, You don't know until you try it...
