PoV: Is there a lack of innovation in the military squad shooter format nowadays? |
Listed in: PSP, PS3 Tags: battlefield 3, call of duty, id Software, John Carmack, modern warfare 3
Has the genre already hit a bit of an innovation wall or is it just a case of too many titles trying to beat the Call of Duty series?

Not entirely so, says id Software co-founder John Carmack. In an interview with IndustryGamers, Carmack defended the genre, saying “As long as people are buying it, it means they’re enjoying it.” He then lashed out against the “snooty attitude” of indie developers who criticise the lack of innovation of the military squad shooter format, saying “It’s almost as if it’s popular, it’s not good. And that’s just not true”.
“If they buy the next Call of Duty, it’s because they loved the last one and they want more of it,” adds Carmack. “So I am pretty down on people who take the sort of creative auteurs’ perspective. It’s like ‘Oh, we’re not being creative.’ But we’re creating value for people – that’s our job! It’s not to do something that nobody’s ever seen before. It’s to do something that people love so much they’re willing to give us money for.”
“So I do get pretty down on people that – you see some of the indie developers that really take a snooty attitude about this."
The problem with the genre nowadays is the fact the industry solely focusing all their attention on creating a COD beater rather than making a whole new experience that is unique to the user. Add to the fact the multiple add-ons that basically offer nothing new.
Now, how about you guys? Do you think the shooter genre has already hit a bit of an innovation wall? Share your thoughts below or continue the discussion at the forums.

So they've changed the environment and the guns are different, doesn't change the fact that it's the same engine with barely any improvements with a facial transplant.
On the surface they are all different but inside they are all the same, they could at least acknowledge that fact by not releasing new games but releasing expansion packs instead.

The only thing that could change is the time and place. Not the story, they all have to follow the basic "go here, kill that"
There's no room for innovation when the concept of the game is to move and shoot.

It's not a lack of innovation, it's just bad gameplay.
I can run behind something in Call of Duty and someone will shoot where I was and kill me! It even happens in matches of Combat Training! The Call of Duty games after MW1 and WaW are just broken, that is all.
