GDC Rant 2: ‘You’re Not A Producer’ |
Listed in: PSP Tags: christina norman, Game Developers Conference, GDC, rant
One thing I like about developers giving rants is that it’s usually a tad more insightful than Youtubers. Like this rant at the GDC from ex-BioWare employee Christina Norman at the GDC, where she said that Mass Effect 3’s day-one DLC isn't a bad idea; it’s necessary.
Gamers complained a lot about the day-one DLC, but Christina says that ‘there’s no point in releasing DLC a year after your game has come out when most people have already sold your game back to GameStop three times’. Fair point. ‘That means getting it out early’, she says, but that gamers ‘rant’ and they ‘’know nothing about the DLC that’s coming out except its name’ and thus conclude that the game ‘must be incomplete’ and ‘ruined’. Fair point.

She then goes on to say developers just want to release awesome stuff and to judge it for what it is, and that gamers should ‘stop thinking’ they are producers and telling us where and when they should build their content. Fair point, but I disagree that telling gamers not to complain when they have an issue is a bit unintuitive; telling gamers to be happy when they’re not just because they’re the consumer definitely won’t progress systems forward.

In my opinion she needs to go on slim fast and not bark at the consumers.

This doesn't justify day one DLC.
The recent day one DLC's have mostly given things that you would normally unlock for free in-game by things like beating the game, finding secret areas, doing certain missions, etc.
That's not what DLC should be.
It should:
1. add to an old game's play time.
2. make gamers want to play the game again.
3. be fun and well made.
4. be something the developer feels that they want to put in a game that wasn't previously thought of.
Without it doing these things, DLC only serves to burden the gamers, while companies get rich from gamers' disappointment.
DLC isn't refundable, and with the used games most likely soon gone;
Saying that the game just gets sold after being played, so later DLC is useless, is an excuse without reason.
Also, perhaps the games wouldn't be sold back so much if new versions weren't released every year.

Sorry for my rant being longer than the one in the article.

Seriously, dropping an extra $20 on top of the game's cost the day it hits shelves is kinda stupid.

"Instead of forking out $2 per every $15 download in fees, why don't we just put it on the disc, still charge $15 for the license and only have to pay $0.30 per sale."
And since christy took a few dumptrucks of cash and shares, she's blasting us for being mad. She's trying to shove that dlc down any none believers throat. I hope she does something illegal and gets caught, fraud or taking more money prematurely, would be no surprise, she's soooooooooooooo o greedy and shouldn't be in gaming. once again
Hey Christina Norman, stop being such a bitch.

Now fresh off of finishing the last project, they probably don't have anything else to work on, so it makes sense to work on DLC.
I see no problem with the devs continuing work on a game after they finish it.
Now say a game is delayed just to put extra content. Unless they have another project, they're most likely going to do the same thing and work on more DLC while the stuff is fresh in their mind. Might as well pump that stuff out early.

If they keep delaying a game just to put extra content or ideas they've had in, the game will never get released.
Most of the time when a game gets delayed it isn't because of content, it's because of performance.

You can apparently unlock it by changing a line of text. >_>
