Are You a Cheater?

We've all run into those guys online that seem to move at supernatural speed or are just unkillable. Whether it's lag-switching in the Gears of War or Call of Duty games or other tampering, they have an advantage that those of us who play fair simply do not have.

Exploits using the rules within the game are one thing, though there are always those who deride them as "cheap," but outright cheating to win is a whole other issue. I, for one, think that cheating usually demonstrates a lack of self esteem, but I'll leave the psychoanalysis for another day. Thankfully, Sony and Microsoft have been cracking down on cheaters and laying the ban hammer on people that get caught cheating.

But what about when you're just sitting around playing a single player game? Do you cheat then? Cheating in video games has been going on since before online play even existed. This doesn't have to imply any sort of hacking or the like, it could be as simple as using a cheat code or a walkthrough. Cheat codes, by definition, are put there by the designers to be used, so they really aren't a "cheat" per se, but they may lessen your enjoyment of the game if you can just put it in God Mode and sail through it. To each their own, however.

Walkthroughs are the same way. I find using walkthroughs and guides tedious, as I want to experience the game as it was designed and allow it to open up before me as I play, rather than knowing what's right around every corner and checking the guide every ten minutes. Of course, if I get stuck and I'm about to snap my controller in half I'll be the first to hit up a FAQ or walkthrough.

Where do you come down on the issue of cheating?

when i was younger and had finished a game i used to look for cheats. they helped extend the life of the game (since i was young i didn't have that many) and sometimes they added stuff that wasn't in the game anyway.

When I was younger, yes, now no.

Now, online I like to knife people on CoD and make them mad just for the lols, like GoodGriefing does. :P

It's not cheating but actually losing, but it's fun.

walkthroughs/player guides are allways a great thing to have especially with tricks that some devs on Live/psn decide to put one shot acheivments/trophys in the games then you find out you missed one but have to start over with a new save which could mean more time wasted. so in all it can help if you want to do a second play through or are just stuck in the game

if you were to drive in a different area, you would bring a map, wouldn't you? Then why do people get upset over using walkthrough guides? sorry, but a game like GTA or Final Fantasy gets very big very quick, and it's nice to know where you are going.

and i agree with the trophy support, especially for finding hidden objects or places where you have to accomplish a certain task or you have to replay the level/game.

I don't play online and I would never cheat someone else but yes, I do give myself a local advantage from time to time.

I don't have time to play a game that take a month to beat. I work for a living and have a family to care for. So I usually tweak a game just enough to remove any need to have to REPEAT any part of the game. Like having to play a level a million times before getting lucky in beating it.

Play through the game, get the story then move on.

It's also fun to play through a game a second time around but with balls to the wall everything.

I'm a big fan of doing things naturally, but I did a fair share of WoW glitching for the sake of exploration back in the day.

Cheating should only be in single-player and coop...

Depends on how much I care about the game really.

Dead Island got no love from me with its cookie cutter RPG and its damageable wespons.
Cheated from beginning to end, and I'm glad I did because it also had jack shit for a story

But games like Mass Effect, Dead Space, Anno 2070, L.A. Noire, and Portal, I never even looked at a guide let alone cheat until I've beaten the game as much as I possibly can.

Then there are some games that encourage you to cheat, like Grand Theft Auto.

I always finish my video games normally... If i really wana keep playing it, ill probably use cheats just for fun. Skyrim for example. I finished the main quest and enjoyed every bit of it. Afterward I used cheats an stuff jus for fun =P

Online cheating however is unacceptable.

Only back in the 8&16 bit days when it was a choice between get completely stuck on a level and throw the controller through the window in frustration or just use a level skip, and anyone who remembers those days will know what i'm talking about.

I can only imagine how difficult it is to break a window with a NES controller.

That thing is lighter than the cable that is attached to it.

I don't mind cheating if it's only me playing or me against firend's but i have a pet-hate for people that cheat online.

Why ruin the fun for others? If it's just you or your mates then I think it's fine, but it's just pathetic to cheat online.

If you can't play fairly then stop f**king playing. At some point someone WILL get mad enough and track someone down and probably stab or shoot them for real... Is it really worth it for the sake of playing fairly?

Matthew sounds like a sore looser on Red Dead Redemption for the playstation 3. This punk from crazy ville seems to be calling the entire user base of psn cheaters using his aim bot and modified keyboard to type utter nonsense.
