VS: Where is Sony? |

As of Late we have seen some remarkable progress from the hacking and homebrew community in their efforts to find and exploit holes in both the PS3 and the PlayStation Vita. Some of you are asking where is Sony? Why haven’t they done anything to stop this?

Sony has done a fairly good job at keeping its console secure this time around when you compare it to the previous PlayStations. We have seen over the years that the PSone was easily hacked with a remarkably simple Mod Chip and the PS2 fell victim to a similar fate although the chip was a slightly harder to install. Sony’s streak of losing console security battles continued with the PSP and despite the contestant Firmware updates the community thrived and oddly enough eventually killed the handheld.

This time around we have seen the PS3 defend itself from the determined hackers time and time again. Yes I know we have seen some success with the advent of 3.41 and 3.55 CFW and as much as I hate to say it even the dongles have done well. But the fact is we still do not have a fully exploitable hack for the PS3. The same can be said for the Vita and although it is still a newer system the most we have seen done on it is VHBL. VHBL works off of the PSP emulator in the Vita so all it does is allow users to play PSP Homebrew on the Vita.
Sony has taken steps to stop the exploitation of vulnerability of VHBL titles. In their last Firmware update 1.81 they even managed to block the newest version of VHBL that was using the Monster Hunter exploit. It has also been hinted at that Sony may even be on its way to implementing an automatic update system for future Firmware’s.

Some of you out there say Sony has lost the battle and that the only security they have is through obscurity. But can you really argue with success? Sony has learned from its experiences over the generations of consoles they have produced and now we are starting to look toward the next generation of PlayStation with no real hack on the PS3 as of yet, unlike the Xbox and Wii.
So where is Sony? Doing what they do best making a better console the competitor.

I think they still have a fair few lessons to learn, security or otherwise. Taking features away, and constantly punishing normal users with updates to make games work, and 2-3 long maintenance periods a week is not the answer. Security means squat if your customer base has little faith in you.

there were alot more legit users than there were pirate users.
for every one decent game, there were 50 crap games.
UMD sucked the crap out of the battery, it really just wasnt that thought out.
ps1, rife with piracy, best seller, best seller games
ps2, rife with piracy, best seller, best seller games
same goes with Xbox360 and Wii, hacked way before the PS3, remind me which unit and games sold better?
thought so, your point is flawed.
everybody who honestly thinks piracy alone killed the PSP wouldnt know crap from their arsehole

But really all they had to do with those 2 was ship out as many consoles as possible and developers do all the work making games.
And since Sony's never had to do any work to sell consoles they had no clue how to develop the Ps3 infrastructure when they had some genuine competition, but people are in such a habit of sticking with PlayStation they just made the lazy choice and bought Ps3.
But people now know Sony are verging on incompetent so when people get to make a fresh choice for next console I'm absolutely certain the Ps4 is seriously gonna struggle.
