Sound Off: Most Overrated Games

Over the course of gaming’s history, there have been a few titles that earned massive critical acclaim. Ocarina of Time, BioShock, Portal 2 – all games that the critic and fan communities embraced with open arms. But just because everyone else loved a particular game doesn’t mean you did.

So this week’s Sound Off is your opportunity to let the world know how you feel. Take a shot at that untouchable game. Let us know why it was overrated, or why it left you unimpressed. All games are on the table here, no matter how hallowed they may be.

I’ll go first – I hated BioShock. While I thought the story was compelling, the actual game was repetitive, boring and sloppy. I felt like the lame mechanics got a big pass from gamers because of the impeccable environmental design, and that the game landed far higher scores than it should have. It is, in my opinion, one of the most overrated games of all time. That’s not to say it wasn’t good; it just wasn’t great.

Well this is turning out kinda crappy, but i'll say red dead redemption,tons of running, stupid missions, and i didn't like the story.
"Oh, i'll kill you if you tell me to do another mission, nah i'll just do the mission, LAST TIME, I swear."

Also, battlefield 3, so fucking shitty story, and a dumbed down bfbc2 with tons of cheap time extensions, no maps are good they are just "okay, i can play on this.",
I don't hate the game, it just doesn't do anything with big wow factors except graphics, plus the business and marketing done behind it was an awful hit on the gaming industry from EA and DICE's part.

Halo: Reach
(didn't fit as a Halo game in my opinion, had a different atmosphere, campaign and multi-player felt like they were forced to be "Call of Duty-ized")

Skyrim
(when compared to it's predecessors, it just didn't seem all too great)

Call of Duty: 6+
(didn't live up to the standards that 4 and 5 set)

Battlefield 3
(less destruction in maps when compared to BF:BC2, bad spawn points on certain maps in certain game types, lack of game types)

Final Fantasy VII
(not bad, but gets too much praise as the best RPG, there are better RPGs that were before and after it)

Left 4 Dead 2
(didn't have the "creepiness"(atmosphere) of the first game)

I'd like to say these are of course just my opinions.

While I feel that these games aren't quite up to the level that their good praise suggests, I know some out there feel that they are and enjoy these games.

So I hope this isn't taken as an offense to those people's favor of these games.

And Angry Birds

I loved Bioshock, one of my all time favorites.

Most Over rated, any of the Grand Theft Auto games. Also Killzone 2 and 3 were over rated. I couldn't get past the KZ2 loading pause and KZ3 looked like a cartoon.

"Hated" is a pretty strong word. I mean I hate Hitler, racism, genocide, etc. but I don't think I really "hated" a game.

BioShock was awesome.

Pretty much every military shooter is overrated to me. I try to get into them but they've pretty much been explored to the Nth degree at this point. They're solid games, which explains their appeal to the masses, but I just can't get into them.

Halo (any), Bio Shock, call of duty series, fallout new vegas, mirrors edge.

I agree 110% with BioShock. The extra 10% comes from my personal enthuasim in taking this game down a notch for reasons you didn't mention. Not that you needed to, but I'll fire away; the atmosphere. What the hell was going on in the dev team when they playtested the game and surely realised the game was as immersive as having to wipe for 2 hours after accidentally clenching up and breaking shit into two?

At least when you finish wiping you feel rewarded. The audio and enemy noises were detatched and loud messes, it felt like I was playing a game inside a game inside a dream out in the street. No attatchement or 'feel' to the game at all.
The shooting and gameplay design in general was generic. I wouldn't feel this bad about it if the game didn't get the same sort of reviews that something like Ocarina Of Time would today.
