Sound Off: Are Reviews too Soft?

There is a problem in the games industry—one that has everything to do with the way in which titles are rated. Many reviewers (and aggregators) use a 1-10 system, or a 1-100 system that’s pretty much the exact same thing.

The only problem is that the enormous majority of games seem to land in the 70-100 range. Bad game? 70’s. Good game? 80’s. Perfect game? 90’s. So what, exactly, are the numbers 1-7 up to? Are they just there for trolls to use while trying to purposefully drag down a Metacritic score, or for when one guy (like the PC Gamer reviewer from earlier) wants to make a point?

This is the question we have for you, QJ readers: Does the current review system work, or are critics and the scores they use a little too soft on sub-par titles?

I give this comment a 1 for scoring your own content. ;-)

Anyway, they're being too soft on games, because they're biased, don't properly score and average aspects, and are paid off by the video gam-*is shot*... :P

you make a good point, a lot of games get over hyped and this is one of those games but reviews can be bad. MoH:Warfighter was hit hard by most critics... except me and well duke nukem was just plain bad

this could be true with anything on the Web. Depends on if the reviewer has a vested interest in giving a positive review.

They should break that shit down into a certain way like youtube videos. thumbs up with what they though was great, so so fo what they thought was ok, and thumbs down, for the things that suck. The 0 - 100 thing is shit, and also the 5 stars is flawed too.

Reviewers are biased. They will have tastes and opinions which is why the review system works when it wants to. Me, personally, say phuck the reviewers, form your own opinion. It's what demos exist for. If not borrow the game.

A "good" review is neither hard or soft. It just reviews the damn game. Keep your bullshit opinion out of it.
