PoV: Would you subscribe for a Call of Duty premium service?

News broke earlier today about Activision's plan to implement a paid service that will complement Modern Warfare 3. Dubbed as Call of Duty Elite, the premium service will give gamers some "extra content that isn't offered on game discs sold in stores, including downloadable map packs that give players new "Call of Duty" levels to play" and players tools which analyzes the players performance within the game, "gauging factors such as which weapons have been most successful for them in killing enemies" ala Bungie.net. It also includes a Facebook-feature will will let players "meet for online gun battles with others who share various affiliations and interests."

The bad news, the service isn't free. According to the Wall Street Journal, Activision is still a little bit “coy” about the pricing, but they are looking for fees comparable with online-entertainment services, such as Netflix's US$ 7.99-a-month movie subscription.

We've heard about this rumor before but never expected it to be implemented this soon. Activision Chief Executive Bobby Kotick said he isn't worried about the potential backlash from gamers about the paid service because players will "still be able to compete against each other online without subscribing to the service," and without the charges, the company’s plans for online support just wouldn’t be possible, another greedy move that can only be described as further milking profits from its loyal consumers and could potentially change the gaming industry anew.

How about you guys? What are your thoughts about the upcoming subscription service? Would you pay for such a service? Share your thoughts below or continue the discussion at the forums.

I hope MW3 gets pirated the shit out off and won't sell at all. These greedy practices should not be supported.

A big FUCK YOU goes out to COD. I hope they fail miserably to show the industry that this greediness will lead to selfdestruction . Battlefield deserves to shine even more now. Now that's a game that deserves respect.

There's not much to be said, really. One can only state what we're all thinking. The saddest part is, that Activision will probably succeed, and make immense amounts of money on this, and then the question really becomes, will the rest of the industry follow suit? Here's to hoping it wont.

Personally if Anon and those self-righteous "hackers" want to hack anything or anyone this would be the thing to hack.

Honestly charging for extra content in an FPS is just rip-off.

anonymous really should hack this game when it comes out along with the service...hahah
I feel like starting a petition to ban "elite" if you will, so that the general public can enjoy a decent game without feeling left out of "special" features. I mean come on! DLC and this now...
What happened to the good old days when gaming was just gaming....
COD really is on thin ice now...Same concept. same ai. same graphics. different time period..

So paying for an overpiced and overmarketed game isn't enough anymore? Now I must pay more while enjoying a possibly good game?

What about Xbox users with their subscription service? PS3 with their 'upgraded' system? And PC users for... for... FOOD!?!

DLC I can understand and get aboard with, but paying monthly for a 'full' game already? Are they turngina shooter into WoW!? I'll sooner burn the disk before that happens.

I've never enjoyed Call of Duty as a franchise (except maybe for Black Ops) so I am definitely not gonna buy into this.

I wouldn't even buy a COD game, but obviously I'm in the minority there.

Nitwits WILL do whatever lady gaga or call of duty wants.

Go for it IMO.

I agree, nitwits who don't pay attention to news about this or are little kids who think this is "cool" will end up buying it, and Activision will be in Cashland once again...
I convinced my friend to buy BF3 instead though, yay! 8) Soon I will convince my XBL friendslist. ;-)

this sucks, the modern warfare games have been my favorite Cod games, both the storyline and the online play. I never pay for that extra crap, and i don't want to start now :( it should be included in the price of the disc.

I only subscribe to a principal called Supply & Demand where if you sell More you charge less or sell more and give more, so like Hell am i gonna pay extra when this 1 game is making more money than 10 average sized developers.

lol this is pathetic the truth is i can see a lot of backlash off this not from idiots kids who think they are cool but from parents who suddenly notice that their kids have linked their credit cards to some pathectic "service" and im sure to suck moor money out of noobs it will soon be exclusive more powerful weapons and increased armor for the "elite" subscribers, basically if you suck at the game subscribe to get online cheats lol truely pathetic
