PoV: Would you subscribe for a Call of Duty premium service? |
Listed in: PS3 Tags: Activision, beachhead studio, call of duty, call of duty elite, Infinity Ward, modern warfare 3, sledgehammer games
News broke earlier today about Activision's plan to implement a paid service that will complement Modern Warfare 3. Dubbed as Call of Duty Elite, the premium service will give gamers some "extra content that isn't offered on game discs sold in stores, including downloadable map packs that give players new "Call of Duty" levels to play" and players tools which analyzes the players performance within the game, "gauging factors such as which weapons have been most successful for them in killing enemies" ala Bungie.net. It also includes a Facebook-feature will will let players "meet for online gun battles with others who share various affiliations and interests."
The bad news, the service isn't free. According to the Wall Street Journal, Activision is still a little bit “coy” about the pricing, but they are looking for fees comparable with online-entertainment services, such as Netflix's US$ 7.99-a-month movie subscription.
We've heard about this rumor before but never expected it to be implemented this soon. Activision Chief Executive Bobby Kotick said he isn't worried about the potential backlash from gamers about the paid service because players will "still be able to compete against each other online without subscribing to the service," and without the charges, the company’s plans for online support just wouldn’t be possible, another greedy move that can only be described as further milking profits from its loyal consumers and could potentially change the gaming industry anew.
How about you guys? What are your thoughts about the upcoming subscription service? Would you pay for such a service? Share your thoughts below or continue the discussion at the forums.

A big FUCK YOU goes out to COD. I hope they fail miserably to show the industry that this greediness will lead to selfdestruction . Battlefield deserves to shine even more now. Now that's a game that deserves respect.

Honestly charging for extra content in an FPS is just rip-off.

I feel like starting a petition to ban "elite" if you will, so that the general public can enjoy a decent game without feeling left out of "special" features. I mean come on! DLC and this now...
What happened to the good old days when gaming was just gaming....
COD really is on thin ice now...Same concept. same ai. same graphics. different time period..

What about Xbox users with their subscription service? PS3 with their 'upgraded' system? And PC users for... for... FOOD!?!
DLC I can understand and get aboard with, but paying monthly for a 'full' game already? Are they turngina shooter into WoW!? I'll sooner burn the disk before that happens.
