1. PoV: Two consoles, two updates, two VERY different reactions
2. Could've been more
Okay, here's the deal. This post is not meant to fan a fanboy war, although I am already bracing myself for it. It's not even meant to make a comparison between competitors Microsoft and Sony for the sake of making them clash, although I am also prepared to see this being taken that way.

The thing, though, is that while it was Sony who went through all the trouble of getting their security breached and incurring the ire of tens of millions of fans and consumers, why does it seem that it's Microsoft who's benefitting from the lessons that the experience had to offer?

rrod

Of course, I am talking about the recent, almost creepily simultaneous update issues being reported for both Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony's PlayStation 3. Both had recent system updates launched via their online services, which, so it seemed, presented major repercussions to their respective consoles. But their similarities in situation end there.

Microsoft totally blindsided everyone, coming out with a preemptive measure, offering affected Xbox 360 owners (the updated reportedly hinders certain Xbox 360 units from reading discs) not only customer service assitance, but also a brand new console unit. They figured their update presents that much damage, and so they went ahead and made the offer, despite unit owners not even aware of the same problem yet.

And then here comes Sony, still winded and reeling from the PSN attack. They're just trying to steady their stride, getting things on a roll to get their affairs back on the right track. Their first order of business: come out with an update that will allow users to change their passwords, and thereby provide strengthened protection to their personal information, which were recently put at risk due to the breach. The problem with v3.61, however, was found out when the newly-released L.A. Noire disc was loaded on the PS3, after which followed a series of overheating and YLOD issues.

XBL didn't go down. People may be migrating to 360 because they think if they pay extra, their servers will somehow be more safe. That's how Microsoft is benefiting. Duh...

Also, Sony said it is not problems with the PS3 software that is causing the YLoD on the PS3. It happens to any firmware because it is a glitch within the game itself.

As a matter of fact in Rockstar forums you can see that the X360 game is also having problems.

I can say from my personal experience that it has few to do with the game and a lot more to do with the update. I updated the console the day the update went online and it was before LA Noire was released. It went YLoD in 10 min and I was in the create a class screen in MW2, I had not even started to play yet.

Same here, except I didn't get the YLoD. I've had it, though, so when my PS3 started to randomly freeze while in-game (MW2), I had a mini-freakout. Just plug in a small fan, and have it pointed toward the back of your PS3. The YLoD is a heating issue in most regards, so this fan trick should completely stop the issue from happening once more.

Hence why it's "preemptive". >_

experience dealing with returns and repairs from the whole RRoD fiasco. Process is in place and customers are accustomed to returning faulty units. Its all part of the 360 experience. And before you call me a fanboy, I have both consoles.

He did not intend to start a flamewar altough the author did, I belive that it was meant to inform us about the situation.
That is not hypocritical by the way.
Further adding, hypocrate is not a word, it is spelled "Hypocrite". Protip: He/she might have tried to brief us about the different handling of the situation.

at first id say fuck it to the current gen consoles cause there's always one fuck up somewhere in the lines, but then i say nintendo has their shit going right, cause i hardly hear this much shit about the wii fucking up. other then the 4.X update that fucked modded systems, but meh. then the 3ds shit came to play.

consoles suck these days. to much power to handle, and fails to handle.

thanks dude, thats the point.

they over powered the consoles this gen. a fucking 2.0 Ghz dual core would be just fine for a console, those games arn't that damn demanding. shit look at ps2. some of the best games you'll ever find, 299 MHz on the newest models.

3.2 ghz 4+ core CPUs aren't necessary for a home console.

The PS3 only has one core.

Rockstar has admitted that the L.A. Noire issues were their own and not Sonys. The issue is also affecting 360's as well as PS3. The more you know!

Yay lets all start another bs console war... NOT!

I wouldn't mind if they'd give me a free Xbox 360 S, it'd be my second. :P Doubtful 'cause it only affects older models.

PS2 was so reliable the disc laser would fail numerous times.

I have another PS2 FAT, not using it now, but when it boots the game it doesn't fail, probably it's one of those which got its hardware revised.

Xbox was more reliable than PS2, plus when it would be hacked it could be used as a media centre.

Iv had 2 fat ps2's since they came out and they've been used thousands of times, even with burnt discs and the lazer still works fine. My xbox however troubles to read discs and I need to restart it 2-3 times before it kicks in and works.

Last gen is still good, the laser in the PS2 and Dvd drive in the xbox are cheap and very easy to replace as those are the only repairs I've ever had to make on them.

Since I have all three consoles it seems what is helping the 360 out is software. It seems msoft if they want to do something they do it and not have to work around anything. guess thats why there a top tier software company. I think sony should somewhat copy there business model.

I love how it's "Creepy" that the updates were "almost simultaneous", yet the 360 update has been planned for some time now.
The only reason I side with Microsoft is because of how Sony acts toward their business overall. It's never their fault after all, right? It always has to be blamed on hackers or dev companies.

My ps3 went pop after 3.61, when i finally got through to the PS3 support line I got fed the line that it was a general fault indicator and I'd have to pay 170 euro to swap it for a replacement. He refused to even acknowledge the fact that the 3.61 update could have.caused the problem. I refused the chance to spend more money on Sony and told him I'd wait til they got sense and replaced my console as they should.

Microsoft had this update planned for quite a long time. Just a coincidence they happened around the same time.
